Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:

If Stargate Atlantis isn't the coolest sci-fi series on television, this five-disc, 20-episode box set from the second season (2005-06) offers ample evidence that it's right up there. The writing is good; the stories are intriguing, and the science part of the equation is credible enough to justify our suspension of disbelief. The characters are for the most part well-defined, and the acting, while perhaps not Emmy-caliber, is just fine. The action is exciting, the effects work impressive, the costumes and sets first-rate. But what Atlantis really has going for it is the presence of some of the baddest bad guys in the cosmos: the Wraith.

With their flowing white locks, cat-like eyes, pale, almost translucent skin, and teeth so bad they'd make the British blush, the Wraith rock. They also have a constant need to feed--on humans, of course--and are a serious threat not only to Atlantis but to the entire known universe, including good ol' Earth. And although there are occasional diversions, the producers and writers have wisely kept the focus on these implacable antagonists; in fact, the newest member of the team, one Ronon Dex (played by the dreadlocked and hunky Jason Momoa), is a 'runner' who escaped the Wraith's clutches, was a fugitive for years before being found by our heroes, and specializes in dispatching the villains with cold precision. In the course of the season, via single episodes and several multi-parters, the Stargate team, commanded by Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson in the show's least interesting role) and led by insouciant Major John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), with genius-neurotic Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) handling the scientific intricacies and yet another doc, Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion, affecting a Scottish brogue), overseeing medical matters, deals with the enemy on many fronts. Lt. Ford (Rainbow Sun Francks) defects after assuming Wraith-like characteristics. The team experiments with a 'retrovirus' designed to turn Wraiths into humans (the results are decidedly mixed). They encounter a human who raised a Wraith female from childhood and insists she's just like us (she's not). They're captured and imprisoned on a Wraith 'hive' ship. And in the final episode, the humans and the Wraiths even form an alliance of supposedly mutual convenience (the episode is a cliffhanger that awaits resolution until Season Three, but anyone who thought this 'partnership' was a good idea for our side clearly hasn't been paying attention). As was the case with the Season One set, bonus materials are generous, including audio commentary (by actors, directors, and others) on every episode, various featurettes, photos, and more. Now if only there were a few Wraith interviews... --Sam Graham

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Faltering slightly
The second season of Stargate Atlantis has quite a few good episodes, but one can already glimpse the storyline weaknesses that will rear their ugly heads in season 3. The characters, too, are changing, and sometimes not for the better.

Lt. Col. John Sheppard has become Jack O'Neill Jr. in this season. He cracks lame jokes, lets others do his work for him, and seems only to be good at flying planes. However, Dr. Elizabeth Weir isn't much different than before; she sometimes ends up making the wrong decision, but she's still fair. Dr. Rodney McKay begins to tread the road from crabbiness to sheer angriness; although brilliant, he seems driven to childishly ostracize everyone around him. Thus, he is very, very annoying, and due to this `conflicted' personality, the writers love giving him center stage. Teyla is still the warrior woman, however, and she offers up her wisdom now and again. Ronon is the newest member of the team; although not being very emotive, he's likeable. Dr. Carson Beckett, becoming a regular in this season, doesn't have much to do but is a very earnest character.

On to the episodes:

The Siege, Part III--7 of 10--This finished the 1st season cliffhanger somewhat well but also somewhat poorly. The spectacular ship Daedalus arrives to deal with the Wraith, but Lt. Aiden Ford is changed subtly by a Wraith, and the latter is a huge mistake. Ford was a nice, likeable, and cheerful character in season 1 and quite frankly, in this episode he becomes ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent!
Love this series. The acting, writing/stories, cast -- it really is fun to watch and keeps your interest. I enjoy it like I enjoyed the SG-1 series.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Very good
This is an excellent product on Amazon, I will try to get some others seasons, it is a great chance to start colect them all.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the best sci-fi series ever!
I grew up watching Star Trek (as in the original series) and have always enjoyed sci-fi. I have to admit that this series is one of the best, past or present. The plots are well-written, the characters have a depth not usually found, the writing, (particularly the exchanges between Rodney and anyone)is first-rate and there are plenty of silly moments - enough to keep even my 7-year-old and 14-year-old entertained. Additionally, there are almost no moments I would feel I had to skip or fast-forward through because I would consider them inappropriate for my kids. I would highly recommend this series to any sci-fi fan.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Chemistry, intelligent writing, and entertainment!
I honestly like this show. Even though I was not hooked to the original SG-1 (but loved the motion picture), Stargate Atlantis grew on me. The script is very well written, with lots of humor. This is intelligent writing at its best. There is chemistry between the cast, and the characters are lovable.

Season 2 begins with the third and final part of Season One's "The Siege". If you recall, Season 1 ended with Sheppard flying into a Wraith hive with an atomic bomb in order to save Atlantis from the Wraiths. Should the Wraiths succeed in taking over Atlantis, they would have direct access to Earth! The Daedalus, a brand-new battle cruiser commanded by Col. Steven Caldwell, saves the day. The Daedalus is able to cruise in hyperspace, and can beam people up and down, just like Star Trek. The configuration of the ship is also the same, with the captain sitting in the middle of the cockpit. Honestly, I think the producers should not have introduced the Daedalus. It is too much of a Star Trek copy-cat. They could have instead created a brand new concept in a futuristic battleship. The battleship in Battlestar Galactica, for example, does not use the same technology as in the Enterprise in Star Trek.

Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa) joins the cast of Atlantis in this season. I like his character, but doesn't he get cold being topless all of the time? You would also think he would be wearing a uniform.

I don't like episodes such as when Sheppard turns into a bug and back again, or ... Read More
