This fan is perfect for what it's designed to do; remove some pollen and dust from the outside air as it's pulled into the home.
I emphasize "some" because even highly efficient filters like the 3M filtrete is only 35% efficient in this configuration. (the electrostatic fibers are designed to operate with much higher flow rates).
I don't want to waste power on the A/C during the nice spring and fall months so I use this to reduce dusting during pollen season and ease the load on my dedicated air purifiers. Sure, you COULD tape a filter to a box fan and call it done. But this looks nice and clean so your neighbors won't snicker as they walk by.
However, it will NOT remove much of anything if used with the cheap blue furnace filters. Those are designed to protect the furnace from debris, not clean the air. They are less than 3% efficient at actually cleaning the air.
This is NOT a replacement for a room air purifier.
1. Performance is abysmal at 1 micron, the size of most allergy causing particles. Cat dander is less than .3 microns, but a filtrete filter doesn't even touch such small particles! A HEPA filter is more than 99.97% efficient at .3 microns.
2. It's really not cheaper than a "real" air purifier. The purchase price, annualized over 5 years (at 3% inflation) is about $10 a year. Additionally, high quality filters must be used to see any benefit (3M filtrete)...and they must be replaced often because axial fans lack the power to pull air through a heavily soiled filter (replace every 3 months).
That drives the annual cost (over 5 years) to about $90 a year.
As an example, the annual cost of a Honeywell 50250 HEPA filter is only $68 over 5 years. (Anualized cost is $32, filter replacement is $36/yr). The real purifier is much cheaper and offers vastly superior performance as a room air purifier...
Good thing this is NOT a room air purifier! Get it and use high quality filters to clean the air you're sucking in from outside, it's great! But don't think it's going to clean up after your cats or significantly reduce your allergy symptoms. For that you need a real air purifier.
Get it for the right reasons, and be happy!

I live in an old house without forced air just old radiators for heat and window AC units when needed.
I have 2 greyhounds and a cat and was concerned about my failure to stay on top of all the pet dander and household dust in general. I own three of these fans and I run them all constantly at various speeds depending on time of day and location.
I think they do a GREAT job considering that they are relatively inexpensive, and the replacement filters are relatively inexpensive too. They have definitely decreased the amount of dusting I needed to do. I did replace the filters with higher performance rated furnace filters and you can definitely see all the dust and dirt they have collected.
These fans are for cleaning the air not really for cooling, although you can use them to pull cooler clean air from outside. They are a bit noisy but I find I can sleep fine with the medium setting and can watch TV on the lowest setting if I raise the volume a bit.
I have recommended these units to several of my friends and will purchase again when they need to be replaced. I'm hoping they continue working at least 3 years or longer.

I put this in front of an open window and I get clean fresher air free of pollen. I have two of these and they work fine. You can get any grade of furnace filter you want, no more getting stuck with expensive OEM filters.

Bought unit to control dust in carpeted bedroom. I have been using the unit for about 2 months with it constantly on. I looked at more expensive air cleaners but did not want ionization. This unit was inexpensive and does a good job. This unit is a fan and does make noise even on low. I found the noise not an issue. My wife is happy as she does not have to dust as much as before. The unit takes standard size filters. Be sure to get pleated filters with a high merv rating as they work best. Great value so far. Minor issue with the logo label coming off out of the box.

Works good although it could be better. There is not enough room b/w the filter and fan blades to get a nice even flow of air through the filter. But air does move through the filter. Still much better then using cardboard and duct tape.
