The Zojirushi EE-LAC50HA 3-Liter Warm-Mist Humidifier is a well-designed product. Since purchasing it I have noticed increased humidity throughout the apartment (around 800 square feet) and I have been very pleased with:
1) its compact and intuitive design,
2) ease of use,
3) lack of annoying lights, and
4) the fact that it does not seem to emit any of the white dust you get from so many other humidifiers.
There is some noise, which is probably because it is a warm air humidifier, but it is barely noticeable. In the living room it doesn't bother me when I am watching TV, for example. If you do not like white noise, especially when you are sleeping, then I think it could be annoying. In that case, you may want to purchase a cool mist humidifier instead.
I have had very positive experiences with Zojirushi products over the years, and this one seems to be high quality as well. It is more expensive than equivalent models from other makers, but worth the extra money in my opinion.

I bought this item two weeks ago and it's been working good. The mode switches automatically based on the humidity of the room. If it's on automatic, it wouldn't last for 12 hours

I've lived on the East Coast for nearly 6 years. It seems like I'm buying a new humidifier every fall since the honeywell and the cranes keep failing every year. The cold evaporative honeywell has a honeycomb wick that grows mold by month 3, so you have to buy these replacements. The warm honeywell, has those pads that you have to replace and it leaves a mineral crust that you have soak in vinegar then scrape out every couple of months. The crane ultrasonically evaporates the water and the minerals which leaves a fine white dust on your computer tv and furniture, and I'm sure in my lungs.
The worst part with all of these humidifiers is that you have to fill up the water tank that is too heavy for anyone but me to do.
This Japanese design is the best! If the kids can water a plant, they can fill up the humidifier. Dad no longer has to do it. Cleaning involves, two tablespoons of citric acid, a pot of water, press the clean button, wait 2 hours. Dump the water. That is it!!!!!!
If this thing lasts more than a year, it is well worth the $160 bucks, and will deserve 5 stars!

If I could give half stars, I would rate this as 3.5 stars. If it weren't so noisy I'd give it a 4 or 5.
I started looking for a new humidifier after I realized that I had left some water in my old humidifier and mold grew in it. I tried cleaning it but tossed it because I wasn't confident that I'd really gotten it clean. Most humidifiers are a huge pain to clean so the ease of cleaning was a very attractive feature. I also thought the magnetic power cord was genius. I almost knocked my old humidifier off the table several times because the cord barely reached my power strip.
-Noise-
Unfortunately, it's VERY loud and I have to wear earplugs when I run it at night. It does an incredible job of humidifying my bedroom and also heats the room up - a plus on cold nights but not so good on warm nights. There are two settings - standard and low. There seems to be no difference in noise. Build up in the container can make it louder so it needs regular cleaning. For a product this expensive you would think they could have put more effort into making it a bit quieter.
-Capacity-
Even on low the humidifier runs out of water after several hours and doesn't make it through the night. I live in New England where the air is dry in the winter. It would probably last longer if I got the humidity up earlier in the evening and refilled it before going to sleep.
-Cleaning-
I find the lid a bit hard to detach so most of the time I leave it on when I am dumping the leftover water before refilling. It's heavy and hurts if it closes on your fingers. You'll definitely want to get the Zojirushi cleaning packets. Zojirushi ADC-05 Electric Dispensing Pot Cleaner 1 Oz.(28 gr.) (Shop around - you may be able to find a better deal.) I didn't realize that cleaning is recommended every 1-2 months. Build up happened very quickly for mine and I tried scrubbing it with a sponge but it was useless. Cleaning is really easy - all you have to do is mix one packet with warm water in a separate container, pour it into the humidifier, top it off, and press the Cleaning button. Brilliant. The instructions are in the manual. They don't tell you how long the cleaning cycle is because it "varies depending on the amount of water, water temperature and room temperature." It takes at least one hour for mine to clean. Note that it is very hot when it's done so you may have to wear gloves or wait before pouring the water out.
-Space-
Unlike other humidifiers, this one needs to be located on the floor, not on a table. It doesn't take up too much space but it needs to be away from walls and furniture so depending on your room set up this could be a challenge. It was for me.
-Bottom line-
If you are a light sleeper who can't wear earplugs, I wouldn't recommend this humidifier. If you need a humidifier for daytime use or can sleep through the noise, I would recommend it. It's very powerful and has prevented my sinuses from drying up and bleeding (a common problem if I forget to start using a humidifier when winter arrives). It's a very good quality machine and doesn't feel cheap like other humidifiers.

Not too loud for a warm mist humidifier and it doesn't make the irregular "glug, glug, glug" sounds like humidifiers with inverted tanks. I've had trouble in the past with an inverted tank leaking so I am glad that the design of this unit makes leaking less likely.
I wish there were more settings than just "low" or "high" but an happy with the overall design and build quality.
