I researched several brands and models looking for a radio with excellent AM reception as we live in the country and are remote from big city signals. This radio was touted to have all the features we were looking for and after opening the box and hooking it up, we were pleasantly surprised at just how much better it performed than our home entertainment desktop model. The am reception is as good as we could expect from even a top of the line radio costing much more, but this radio performs beautifully. We were equally impressed with the quality and volume of sound from its built in speakers, they provide ample volume and clarity even from a distance. The radio is sleek, beautifully designed, simple to operate, lightweight and functional. If there were to be a drawback or a downside, it wuld have to be that it has no carrying handle, but the back is designed with a comfortable lip that allows it not to slip from your fingers when you pick it up. We can deal with the loss of a standard handle, it clearly was designed with quality in mind. I would recommend this radio to anyone, and it is seldom that I am so overwhelmingly satisfied with an internet purchase. The purchase price was half of the radio we started to buy and I am convinced that it would have been hard pressed to compete with the features this little beauty gives us! This is one purchase that made my day!

Best portable ever owned. On my mail rte. I can listen to Rush w/o any fade or weak spots and with a push of a button I can switch to FM and hear great sound and reception.

For several years now, I'd been using a small Sony 3AA, single speaker radio whilst in my work truck. With certain engine, road, and wind noises, it was difficult to hear it even on loud volume settings. Just got this new Sangean as a birthday gift this month, and WOWZA YOWZA! The RDS function is new to me and very nice. I see the station ID, their tagline, artist, and name of song as it repeatedly scrolls. I alternate between music on the FM side, and Rush and Tom on the AM side. No issues w/ volume in the trucks whatsoever. If it's dusk or dark outside, switching stations w/ the preset buttons activates a nice orangey color on the LCD for a little while. The reception is excellent even though I leave the telescopic antenna in its retracted position. It has four little rubber pads on the bottom of the unit; I believe the Sony had none. The stereophonic separation and detail is better than I thought despite the close proximity of both speakers. My initial set of batteries were Ray O Vac alkalines. But I'm about to switch to Eneloop (Sanyo's) AA batteries w/ the C size adaptor housings to save a little money, and do my part in being "green." Plus the AAs w/ C adaptors will lighten up the total weight of the unit too. I like the feature that automatically sets the time when you hold down a button for about 2 seconds - based on info from the station. If it had 10 FM presets, not 5, that would've been a touch better; but overall I'm very pleased with this unit. I'd not heard of Sangean before, but would strongly consider their other products. In fact, I'll probably get one more for picnics, beach outings, poolside fun, and so forth in the near future!

This radio was delivered quickly and gets great reception in any room. I like the simple dial knob for volume. Also I like that I can leave it plugged in in the kitchen and keep the batteries charged up, and then move it to other rooms in the morning when I'm getting ready. The sound quality is a bit muted and it doesn't seem to make much difference when I have it on stereo or not, but it's probably about as good as any portable radio is going to get. (I did debate between the D5 and the D7, and got the D5 because of the dual speakers so that really was the only disappointment). Mostly though I'm very happy with this.

It tunes AM and FM well but the almost no high frequency sounds escape from the speakers, even on FM stations. It sounds a little like a rug or a wall is in front of the unit. It could be defective, or it could be that it's designed this way.
I actually like the sound of my Sony Shower radio better.
I am returning the product.
