Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Surf's Up is a computer-animated sports mockumentary about penguin surfing contests, which makes it stand out from the crowd of penguin movies. The story unfolds as it would on ESPN, with interviews (with penguins) overlapping footage of (penguin) surfing action, gradually unveiling the tale of Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf, Holes), a young penguin from Antarctica with dreams of winning a surfing competition--a competition named after his idol, the missing Big Z (Jeff Bridges, The Big Lebowski). But when he joins the competition, Cody finds his zeal for winning may not be enough to defeat the cruel reigning champ, Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader, Grim & Evil). The story of Surf's Up is typical stuff: Youngster learns to value friendship over material success. But the documentary style gives the movie a different rhythm from the usual feature-length cartoon; it stutters and skips around, dithers on side topics, and backtracks to catch up with supporting characters. Some viewers may be annoyed, but others--perhaps the more media-savvy--will find it a refreshing change of pace. (Kids who don't watch much sports, however, may just find it confusing.) Surf's Up also features the voices of James Woods (Hercules), Zooey Deschanel (Elf), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). --Bret Fetzer

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Like Lots and Lots of Penguins
This was a funny movie but I liked Lots and Lots of Penguins better. It's got funny seqences of real penguins, some animation and facts and trivia about all 17 species of Penguins! It's a blast and my kids love it!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Movie!
You hear it over and over: too many penguin movies. But this one is great, for both kids and adults. See it!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - For All Big Lebowski Fans
Never heard of this film and never wanted to watch it until somebody very cool whom I trusted said I had to. Imagine my surprise when I hear Jeff Bridge's foghorn voice moaning over the soundtrack. What a bit of inspired casting - he reprises The Dude role in The Big Lebowski. The improv style of the lines, the camerawork, and The Dude set this apart from all other animated films of recent vintage. The scene with The Dude - I mean, Big Z the Surfer Penguin - teaching Shia LeBoeuf's little angry boy penguin how to make a surfboard has got to be one of the best buddy film scene sequences of all time. Simply re-enacting the lines from the scene - and I'm a very bad actor - had my initially cynical friends in stitches. "Feeel the board...fiinnnd the board...the board is in the wood, just fiiind it, looong slooow strokes..." Not to mention how every time he surfs a tube, Big Z turns around and prays to it. It's so Zen and so The Dude, you will just die laughing.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - superior penguin flick
My husband and I were in Blockbuster one Friday night, and they had a preview for a penguin movie. The water was mesmerizing, the image so beautiful, I could hardly wait to watch it with the kids.

When we saw Happy Feet, I was excited to finally see that beautiful penguin movie. Or so I thought. What I saw instead was a bunch of penguins singing Prince songs, among other things. Warner brothers was showing off its music catalog with Happy Feet, but I don't know what they were doing as far as movies go. That was a jumbled mess with Robin Williams playing like 5 characters and a bunch of loopy tap dancing numbers. Savion Glover looks like a street person in the scary special features section too. That loopy Prince song playing in the credits messed me up man. I kept shaking my head to erase that bad trip.

Based on an ancient cartoon about an opera singing papa owl with an `Owl' Jolson son, Happy Feet is a fish out of water story. Sort of. Then there's a weird plot line about finding the aliens who polluted the water and got rid of the fish, and then the deal about the penguins can communicate by tap dancing, and how that even catches man's attention. And they all get fish! I think. Because by that point I was gone. Couldn't. take. it. any. longer!

I was still shuddering weeks later when Surf's Up appeared in the mail. I saw the beautiful water, but I was still muttering "I can't believe!" under my breath. I mean, Happy Feet! It looked so promising!
