![]() Rating: - Magellan 3250Super easy to use and excellent maps. I did take advantage of Magellans offer to update the installed maps. The maps were great before I did and excellent and totally up to date since I did. Due to an emergency the other night I had to go to to a new neigborhood and street that I did not know. All I had to do was turn the unit on, input the new address and go. Within minutes I was at ther front door. Again a new neighborhood and street and my 3250 brought me right to it! The sound is good and the unit names the streets clearly. This is not my first GPS but it is by far my best. The screen is bright and clear even in the bright sun. As to what I have read about poor or no customer service I do not agree. I have had no issues with customer service and have found them very responsive even though it appears that I may have been speaking to service agents off shore. They have handled all my questions quickly and professionally including the updating of my maps. There is a $10.00 charge for the current update when you purchase a new unit but well worth it. The POI of interest are plentifull and current. This is a great GPS that offers all that you may need. If this unit does not have it, you probably do not need it. I have not tried the traffic servce yet and probably will not. Rating: - Very good after sell supportI was able to get update map, very good customer service, web sit can be improved. Rating: - Filled with great featuresIt's very easy to use and I love that you can choose your route and even avoid toll roads. Rating: - Read the fine print.Don't try to compare items or may end up with all of them. That's right, I was comparing the prices of 3 different GPS systems when, after advancing to the next screen i realized that I had just purchased all of them. One of the items was actually doubled. I immediately set about cancelling the order which, Amazon informed me, was successful. I then set about ordering the actual item I wanted. When i checked my email for verification purposes I came across the cancellation verification email and the confirmation email for my actual order. Several later my item arrived and I was pleased. Several days after that however, my cancelled order arrived as well and I was not pleased. When I again went back to verify my email cancellation verification I found that Amazon had cancelled the order for the item I wanted (which happened to be one of the items on the Canceled order). Now I have to pay to have the cancelled items returned. Way to go Amazon! You are obviously well-endowed with members of the shallow end of the gene pool. Rating: - Decent, but what a shame! Not a bad unit, but for the hundreds I spent I'm disappointed. It was purchased from a TV shopping channel that promised something like 6 to 12 months of updates including live traffic. At the time I put the unit straight to use while I drove to jobs all over the country. Months later I finally had a little time to try the updates, but the website only mentioned 90 days of free ones. I tried to register many times but kept getting kicked back to the first page. I sent them an email about the problem, and mentioned how I DON'T use Internet Explorer for security reasons. Weeks later I got home and found they responded by telling me that I have to use IE. I didn't even bother trying again because everything on their site told me I'll need to bend over and shell out $80 for newer maps. I refuse to be robbed after spending over 200, I could buy other brands (refurbished units) for less than they want for maps. So I'm dealing with maps that could be 3 to 5 years old. I've driven miles where no road exists in Arkansas, invisible interstate entrances in Milwaukee, non-existing exits in Florida, etc. Oh, and 8 hours oddly added to a trip from SD to ND. But my biggest recent frustration is the 3250's POI's (points of interest). After driving many miles to a store only to see it doesn't exist, I searched the internet for resolve. It's AMAZING what's out there, even the locations of all the red light cameras in the 48 states. BUT!.... DON'T BOTHER DOWNLOADING POI's OFF THE INTERNET! The 3250 appears to only accept .poi files, which are completely non-existent. All over the net people are having good luck with Magellan's POI Editor, which comes on the disc. That's because many models use the .mgln format, BUT NOT THE 3250! I spent hours with the software to confirm that it won't do anything with the .poi format. So, even the software that CAME with the 3250 won't work with the 3250! I even found someone's newer .poi folder on the internet. He claimed it was for a different model, but should work on many. Of course it didn't work for mine. Go ahead and spend the hours researching, I only wish you could prove me wrong. I finally found some guy's report about the obscure .poi format and the company that may have developed it. It sounds like he spent weeks trying everything to update or edit .poi's, including many messages back and forth with Magellan. His conclusion was a profound "No go, don't waste your time". So, it's a nice unit. But you better buy it for cheap and keep your wallet open for expensive new maps and POI's. If I ever get totally fed up I'll simply spend $50-$70 on the latest refurb unit from Nextar or whatever. |
