Much like the films of Hal Hartley, Waitress is funny in a deadpan sort of way, but a sadness lurks below the surface. After making a splash in Hartley's The Unbelievable Truth and Trust, Adrienne Shelly turned to directing with Sudden Manhattan and I'll Take You There. Set in a small Southern town, her third picture revolves around waitress Jenna (Felicity's radiant Keri Russell), who works at Joe's Pie Diner (Joe is played by Andy Griffith). Jenna is the pastry genius who makes Joe's joint shine. Her co-workers include the forthright Becky (Cheryl Hines, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and insecure Dawn (Shelly). All three have man trouble, but Jenna has it the worst. Her husband, Earl (Jeremy Sisto, Six Feet Under), treats her like a piece of property. When she finds out she's pregnant, Jenna fears she'll be stuck with him forever. Then, she develops a crush on her married obstetrician, Dr. Pomatter (Nathan Fillion, Serenity). With the aid of her fanciful confections, like peachy keen tarts, their flirtation develops into a full-blown affair. It appears to be a no-win situation, but Shelly finds an empowering way to bring this bittersweet story to a close. If the candy-colored conclusion plays more like fantasy than reality, it's a fantasy worth embracing. Sadly, Shelly was murdered before Waitress ever saw the light of day (leaving behind a husband and child of her own). Fortunately, her final film is far more life-affirming than morose, although it does end with the word 'goodbye.' --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - I Am the Waitress -- Superficial, Narcissistic, Predictable -- Goo Goo Goo Joob
Waitress isn't the worst film I've ever seen. But after thinking the question over very carefully, I've decided it's the third worst film I've seen, of about 50, over the past two years. It is pretty wretched.

The film only mildly annoys in its first half hour; its worst transgression appears to be the kind of stilted, someone-thinks-this-is-clever-but-it-really-isn't dialogue that afflicts the typical HBO series (think Sex and the City.)

But before too much time has passed, the sorry predictability of the film's plot devices starts embedding itself, one cliché at a time, into the viewer's increasingly maddened brain. It's immediately obvious who the protagonist's forbidden love interest will be, seconds after introduction. It's immediately obvious that the crusty old curmudgeon will turn out to have a heart of gold. And it's distressingly obvious that the sniveling wuss of a suitor will, despite a horrific initial impression, win over his love interest.

If those all sound like cartoony stereotypes to you, then you already have some insight into other problems with Waitress. Characters aren't developed in multiple dimensions. The older waitress, played by Cheryl Hines, is a hardbitten "Flo" knockoff (from the sitcom "Alice.") The younger one, played by the director, is an insecure ugly-duckling type. Not much more to either than that.

The worst stereotyping is visited upon the men. The protagonists's husband is a knuckle-dragging mouth ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Good Movie :)
This is a very cute movie. Its very real with a feel good ending (well, mostly) and definitely worth seeing.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Dissapointing
I'm a big Keri Russell fan but this film was really dissapointing. It's too bad because it was a good idea, there just was no good dialogue, drama, screenplay or intensity of any kind. Granted it's not supposed to be an intense movie but rather more of a "feel good" uplifting, family type film. But it really was none of those either. The lack of thematic continuity, good dialogue and dramatic story line just make this film fail big time. Sorry Keri! August Rush was better than this but it had it's flaws as well. A good Keri Russell film is ironically one produced not for theaters but for television called "The Lottery"; that's worth seeing, Waitress however is just barely worth seeing.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Waste of time!
How is it that so many people gave this boring loser of a movie 5 stars!! One star is half a star too many! Listening to Kerri Russell's fake southern accent go in and out was painful...as was watching her character be so responsive to her abusive husband. The only entertaining part was her playful banter with Andy Griffith. Otherwise the movie is terrible, and a complete waste of time. Save it for a better movie!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - This movie is just adorable... and it made me start craving pie.
This movie is just adorable... and it made me start craving pie.

Keri Russell is pitch-perfect as the unhappily married, unhappily pregnant waitress who just wants to bake delicious pies and get far away from her obnoxious, abusive husband. Its very seldom that a movie can be "uplifting" and "heartwarming" and still show genuine people living their lives making believable mistakes and celebrating their little victories.
Never too sweet, never too cloying, just the right mix of warm and realistic with just a pinch of fairy-tale ending.
