This filter is the one bad part of the system. I have not really noticed the bad smell, but the plastic piece came loose and much of the charcoal escaped. A poor construction on a otherwise good system.

Has this sweet almost acrid odor after washing. I rinsed mine in plain water but I couldn't seem to get rid of the smell. My 2 star rating is in reference to the life of the filter and the fact that I don't believe this product performs well after washing. The filter before washing functions fine. I love my Rabbit Air purifier (its greatly reduced my multiple cat allergies), not a fan of the Charcoal filter.

This item was a direct OEM replacement to the filter that came with my unit. My original had a plastic frame while this one has an aluminum one. They also do not have the honeycomb cell shapes (for the charcoal) anymore.
Aside from the obvious shipping materials (which were ample): The packaging for this product is minimal: only a purple bag around it. No pointless extra box or other materials you just end up throwing away. The purple bag is "PE rated for recycling.
My last filter lasted 3 years, which is the same duration they suggested. How I knew it was time to change out the filter was that the unit stopped clearing odors (i.e. cooking, cats) from the room.
I did, however, wash the filter every month or so with Ivory dish soap and warm water.

I had the same problem as the other Rabbit owner. I washed the filter and could not get rid of the odor. Next time I will not wash it and just have to get a new filter.

I have had the rabbit air purifier for 6 months. The first time I washed the carcoal filter was in March and it took 4 washings to clean it so it didn't smell horrible.
I just took it out and cleaned it again in June and it is disgusting. I have even soaked it in baking soda water is still it is enough to make you leave the room. :(
I wonder if everyone has this problem.
Sadly I am stuck with this machine, I cannot return it so I am unhappy.
I just ordered two charcoal filters because they probably all smell terrible after washing.
