Rating: - Listen to Wai Notes rather than The Letting Go
Wai Notes is a great way to look into how Will Oldham creates his albums, as many people are saying, but it is also an excellent album that can stand on its own. In fact, I find it much better than the finished version of The Letting Go. The demo versions of these songs have a more intimate and rough-hewn quality that harkens back to Oldham's earlier Palace music, or the songs of the Western Music EP. I respect Will Oldham's music tremendously, but couldn't help but feel as if there was some urgency missing from a lot of the tracks on The Letting Go. Buy this album and treat it as a finished work, not just an alternative to The Letting Go!
Rating: - Great Companion Piece to The Letting Go
If you've even heard of this album then you probably know what it is and have already decided to buy it; but for those of you who have stumbled upon it by chance, it is essentially a rough draft of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's latest full-length release, The Letting Go. Having said that, it's imperative that you be familiar with The Letting Go in order to fully appreciate Wai Notes. The latter gives the listener insight into the creative process and development of the songs into their final version through different arrangements, mistakes, and even alternate lyrics (let's just say that the surreal image of wearing someone else's skin to "go out in the snow" can be so much more bizarre). The sound quality is the lo-fi demo sound found on albums like Days in the Wake, and the beautiful album art/packaging is worth the purchase alone. Wai Notes is a must for the seasoned listener--or any fan of The Letting Go--but newcomers should start elsewhere.
