Editorial Review:

Product Description:
More than any previous season this 13-episode story arc is character-based and internally driven by clashing agendas. Sub-plots run the gamut of neighborhood killings and gang-banger conflict but as always The Shield also finds room for plenty of mordant wit and tension-relieving sarcasm. Like all previous Shield DVDs this four-disc set includes informative episode commentaries from the entire cast (including Close) engaged in revealing discussions of their creative process with creator Shawn Ryan and several primary writers and directors. Best of all the "Under the Skin" documentary is a way-above-average 60-minute survey of The Shield's day-to-day production offering plenty of behind-the-scenes footage and eloquent insight about the challenge of maintaining high-quality drama during a fast-paced guerilla production schedule. It's essential viewing for Shield fans and anyone considering a career in television.System Requirements:Running Time: 627 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 043396250413 Manufacturer No: 25041

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO...
VICK MACKEY ALWAYS CATCH THEM, IN THIS SEASON A NEW MENACE HAS COME TO TOWN, ANTWON MITCHELL.
AN EXCELLENT CHOISE IF YOU'RE NEW, YOU DIDN'T MISS A LOT FROM THE LAST 3 SEASONS, BUT IF YOU CAN, BUY ALL TOGETHER.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Good one!
Good series. Fantasy and a lot of fun. The script is full of laughs - some obvious and lots of sleepers.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Season four is dark and boring, lacks range and vibrancy
Seasons 1-3 were extravagantly Shakesperian, a huge range of stories and characters and emotions, some quirky and some truly horrible shocking stuff thrown in here and there. All in all, compelling to watch, albeit with one eye squinted shut for some of the scenes.

However, in the fourth season, almost all of the interesting backstories of the detective's and police personal and family members are dropped, the dialogue is embarassingly stilted and the limited storylines cliched, obvious and overworked. It is kind of weird how a few of the police personnel and family members are brought in for an personal scene or two during season four, but no storyline are developed or advanced. What happened there? They must have decided to hog the screen time with Glenn Close as the new chief and the detectives and focus totally on the grimy street stuff and ramp up the vulgarities. Didn't work.

Even the vulgarity flatlines, which reminds us that vulgarity has to be somewhat intelligently used to be shocking or funny. What happened to the bouncy lines, deliberately choppy police photography, and quick plot moves two steps ahead of typical TV shows and movies?

Season four also takes a boring nosedive into endless soapboxy black vs. hispanic racism and poverty politics. Yawn. They overworked an "Antoine" drugdealer storyline to death, the name "Antoine" said every other line... and the character Antoine was just an asmathic beefer without an ounce of charisma or a flicker of intelligence which they tried to juice up with more "shocking" vulgarities than usual. Double-yawn. Where were the other storylines? The excellent Michael Chiklis attempts to carry the show with his presence, and acheives a bit of lift-off here and there, but even he looks like he is acting, a one-trick pony stuck with cliched lines, brain-dead plotlines, and his "mad as hell" face throughout the entire season.

What is missing from this season is about 20-30 more storylines for range and movement as well as a freer range of emotions. The humor and fun and humanness of the other seasons was mostly due to Chiklis's huge personality, his huge sense of humor, his charismatic ability to charm, resulting his consistent ability to evoke viewer empathy and an almost total suspension of reality. Charging around crapsville with a scrunched up frowny face isn't all that interesting or entertaining. And swashbuckling Shane... they were all over the map with his character in season four, they dumbed him down and made him way more vulgar and evil than was believable and then reversed it. Didn't work. At all. I don't think Vic or Shane cracked a smile all season four.

Glenn Close manages to be dull and predictable even with a mean-faced witchiness about her. Triple yawn.

Well, the upside is that the show isn't so compelling that I can't get my work done anymore. In season four you can leave the room without fearing that you missed anything. Rewind to make sure. Yup. Nothing missed but more flat predictably violent, vulgar and scrambling-for-survival scenes with dumb dialogue.

Got all six seasons. Hope things pick up once I get this place cleaned up. :)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great show
The Shield is a fantastic series, and this season was not disappointing. Bringing in Glenn Close as the Barn's captain was good - and how she is quickly swept out is great.
I did not start watching this show until recently, and have caught up on DVD. It is an outstanding show, with a lot of gray areas to contemplate.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This SHOW Gets Better EVERY SEASON!
What an AWESOME show. The returning cast is top notch, but you also get Glenn Close as well. If you've never seen the Shield before, you are lucky because you don't have to wait a week for the next episode. Start with SEASON ONE because each season builds on the previous one and gets better and better. Love the SHIELD!
