Amazon.com: The 'gold' of the title refers to an elusive pirate's booty, but it just as easily could mean the sun-washed glistening shores of Florida, or the sumptuously tanned bodies of its appealing stars, Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. The whole film is awash in golden highlights, and the scenery and cinematography make the experience akin to taking a tropical holiday. Hudson and McConaughey reprise the chemistry they first exhibited in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, sparking and tangling and kvetching, while all the while the audience knows, of course, they adore each other and are perfect for each other. McConaughey is a dreamer, on the trail of a sunken pirate's treasure, and Hudson his now-ex-wife, a historian who prefers life to be a little more sedate. McConaughey, as Finn, delivers impassioned speeches to Hudson, as Tess, saying, 'You want history? It's in the ocean, lady!' Before you can say Romancing the Stone, Tess and Finn are grudgingly reunited in search of the booty. If the plot doesn't contain many surprises, the froth of the stars' chemistry is amiable and makes for a perfect date movie. Scuba divers may find McConaughey's antics below the surface to be wildly unbelievable and usually fatal, but in the end viewers will root for him to surface, and recapture the heart of his lady love. --A.T. Rating: - It's all been done... and this doesn't really do it better
Fool's Gold takes an old formula and plugs in a couple of current 'hot bods' to try to mine some coin at the box office and later (now) on disc. Unfortunately the formula has been used too many times and what we are given in Fool's Gold doesn't really add enough new twists to make it compelling enough to recommend as a buy. Even as a rental, this one is a bit weak and something that could just as easily be passed over for something else.
This movie wanders territory between the 2 and 3 star range, and if possible, I'd plant it around 2.5 for the whole product. The Blu-ray is relatively light on extras, but that may be more a matter of the studios showing us some mercy. The gag reel that is included isn't all that funny and really doesn't show us much to keep us interested. The Featurette: "Fool's Gold: Flirting with Adventure - The Chemistry Between Two Charming Contemporary Stars" makes up the remaining bonus material, but that's little more than 5 minutes of ego boosting material for the film's stars.
Best recommendation, rent it first, if not skip it entirely. :-(
Rating: - Fun but not smart
It was funny and cute but the back story was a bit complicated. It compares to IN TO THE BLUE which I thought was better.
Rating: - Fun Mindless Romp
You know what? This movie isn't as bad as everyone says it was. It's no award winner, but if it's on TV take the time and watch it once. I fully expected to hate this movie when my husband rented it. About 20 minutes in I decided that this was a fun, light hearted popcorn flick. The movie it reminded me the most of was "Romancing the Stone" though McConaughey is no Douglas, it's still a movie in that vein. Fun, light hearted with a splash of adventure, amusing romance, some slightly over the top action, and treasure.
Quick Summary: Finn and Tess are getting divorced because he's an irresponsible bum/ wanna-be treasure hunter and she wants more out of life. The day their divorce is final, Finn finds a piece of the treasure they had been hunting for. They begin their hunt, while dodging Finn's competitors and previous thugg "benefactors", all while trying to win back the love of his now ex-wife.
From the beginning you know how this will end... but it's a fun ride either way. Don't go out and buy this, but it's fun for a rental or to watch when it comes on TV.
Rating: - More interesting than I thought it would be but....
This movie is totally predictable, but the treasure hunt kept me interested...that and McConaughey's super-hot bod! There's a brief shot of full nudity, but you don't see his front bits just his side and booty from far away. Still, it was nice! ;)
Kate Hudson is a good actress, and she's really funny. She has a way of delivering her lines differently than I think other actresses would...she is more subtle when saying her punch lines, but that makes them even more hilarious.
The movie was fun and quite an adventure, but I would have liked to have seen more of the on screen romance on screen and not hidden behind books or tables or whatever.
I have to add that I do love Mr. McConaughey to pieces, but there is just something about his accent that makes all his characters seem like the same guy in different movies. I would love to hear him try a British accent sometime or even just something more straightforward and plain rather than southern. And I love looking at him, but I would like to see him in a role where he doesn't take his shirt off at all.
Rating: - Fun movie!
I really enjoyed watching this movie. It looks especially nice on Blu-ray! Don't expect oscar material, just your average entertaining movie. I highly recommend renting it.
