I've owned the DT-400W for about 3 months and am very pleased with it's sensitive reception of the AM or Medium Wave band. Being located in Ohio I was able to listen to WCBS on 880 KHz in New York and the Philadelphia station on 1210 Khz during the World Series with no problem inside or outside the house. At night I am able to listen to many stations across the country from Denver to Deleware and Milwaukee to Miami - at times you can do even better..
FM reception is excellent and the reception of the NOAA Weather Band is very good. The headset wire is used as the FM antenna.
The design of this small radio is excellent and well thought out.
The speaker is good for it's size but I almost always use headphones.
I currently own many nice radios from the Drake R8B to a GE Super Radio III and the Sangean DT-400W is my favorite small personal size radio.

Needed a dependable weather radio in order to get latest updates immediately from the nearby regional office of the NWS. After reviewing everyone else's comments on Amazon, this unit seemed to be a good choice in terms of value and performance. We've tossed out THREE! Sony am-fm-wx portables for dependability (NOT!) issues. Like most buyers have noted, the Sangean's dangling wire antenna is, well, cheesy, and I find the lack of an AC/plug-in option just plain silly. I put rechargeables in it, figure they'll last a couple of months between charges.

When eventually my tiny Sony M1W died after 20 years of faithful service, I was on the look out for a small, AM/FM receiver with a loud speaker for occasional use even though I would mainly use the ear phones. Other criteria were: digital readout, no telescopic antenna (what's the use of a 4" pocket radio, when to use it you have to have a fragile 2 foot antenna sticking out?), station memory that didn't vanish when the battery ran out, and a backlit screen. Well the Sangean DT-400W has all these, and more. It has a built in clock and a weather band that can be set to alert you to impending bad weather. However, all of this would be for naught if the reception was poor. The reception is truly excellent, not only on FM, but it is remarkably sensitive on AM too and the weather channel is as clear as a bell. One nice feature is that you can switch from stereo to mono if you are listening to a weak FM station. This immediately silences the background hiss you always get from a stereo radio working too hard to pull in a distant stereo broadcast. The FM antenna is the wire feeding the ear phones, but if you'd rather listen to the speaker then Sangean supply about 18inches of wire that plugs into the earphone terminal as an alternative. There is a Bass boost switch which has no effect through the 1.5" speaker (not surprisingly), but is noticeable through the pretty good earphones which come with the radio. Build quality is good, the bright yellow plastic case having a quality feel about it, and the instructions are written in decent English. The only problem I have with the radio is that if I program a frequency into one of the 19 memory locations, and later change my mind and want to delete that memory, there seems no way to do it short of overwriting the location with another frequency. Eventually I will end up with 19 filled memories and to find the station I want I will have to cycle through them. Perhaps there is some way to erase a memory, but so far I haven't found it and the manual isn't telling. Removing the battery won't help either because the memories stay even if the battery is taken out! It is only this inability to erase a memory that stops me awarding the radio 5 starts.

I gave this five stars because I think it's the best transistor radio on the market. It has great sound at low volumes to fall asleep to and a defeatable 90-minute shutoff. The feather-touch controls can be locked with a switch. The reception is as good as you're going to find in a small radio, and this is smaller than the much less expensive competing models made by SONY and Panasonic. Is it worth the price? You decide.
There's a lot to like, but this is what I don't like:
(1) Cannot turn off the LED display when radio is turned off to save battery power.
(2) The LED displays the frequency of the station currently being played. Don't I already know that? I'd rather see the time displayed. If I want the time, I have to briefly turn the radio off and then back on.
(3) It doesn't like rechargeable 'AA' batteries I've tried. Anyone else had this problem?
All-in-all, I am very happy with this radio. Since this is a very pricey transistor radio, you may want to protect it. The 'Vidpro VHC-20 Shockproof Hard Digital Camera Case' (currently available from J&R through amazon.com) fits this radio very well. This case has mesh webbing against one interior wall where the floppy wire FM antenna can easily be stored, too.

This is my fourth Sangean radio. Sangean makes high quality radios with reception far better than what's available in stores. The DT-400W is no exception. Reception is excellent, and sound quality is as good as can be expected for a small radio. I highly recommend this product.Sangean DT-400W AM/FM Digital Weather Alert Pocket Radio
