Amazon.com: Jason Statham fights for family and country in this sword-and-sorcery adventure adapted from the popular Dungeon Siege video game by notorious B-movie jack-of-all-trades Uwe Boll. After Statham (a farmer named Farmer) loses his wife (Claire Forlani) and son to the monster troops of wicked sorcerer Ray Liotta (just one of the film's many eccentric casting choices), he trades in his plowshare for a sword to administer some medieval justice. Meanwhile, Liotta is hard at work at unseating aging king Burt Reynolds and replacing him with his foppish nephew (Matthew Lillard). Eventually, Statham is joined in his quest by veteran warrior Ron Perlman and the father-daughter wizard duo of John Rhys-Davies and Leelee Sobieski, but audiences may be lost by then; In the Name of the King is far too poorly paced and written to merit its 127-minute running time (and the American version is shortened by 30 minutes!), despite some energetic battle scenes choreographed by Tony Ching (House of Flying Daggers). Those amused by Boll's campy productions may find some humor in Kristanna Loken's vine-swinging jungle girl, or in the performance by Lillard, who seems determined to enjoy himself at all costs. --Paul Gaita

It's saying something about this movie that it's so bad I don't really know where to begin. Perhaps it's a bit better to list the positive aspects of it, since there's so darn few of them.
The special effects are somewhat decent, and it's a pretty clean movie as far as gore, swearing, and nudity go. Despite extremely lengthy battle scenes, I don't think I saw a single drop of blood; thus it might be an OK kid's movie. The sets are pretty well done, and the music's not half bad. The budget was clearly high- there's some pretty darn good casting and it's a very long movie. I suppose this can be considered good or bad, as the plot line just isn't arresting enough to warrant such length; I think the movie would have been significantly easier to sit through if it were about half as long.
That said, pretty much everything else is as bad as its possible to go. Those that have seen the previously disastrous Dungeons & Dragons will find a great deal of parallel here: normally decent actors reduced to props by horrible lines, uninventive plot, and wooden directing. Special effects and fighting seemingly used to pass time and make it longer. Villains you'd actually be cheering for if they also weren't such tools and props.
Perhaps the worst thing that can be said about 'In the Name of the King' is that I actually played Dungeon Siege, all the way through. As far as action RPGs go, it was attractive but rather dumb- quite dull once you got tired of its pretty visuals. But as lackluster as the game was, this movie is ten times worse- I'd seriously have had more fun digging up my old copy of DS and giving it another go. At first, I didn't know this was directed by Uwe Boll, whom I've heard a lot about on the Internet and even seen a petition signed by thousands of people asking him to stop making movies based on games. I didn't really think any director could be purposely terrible like that, and figured his movies were merely weaker than they are hyped up to be. Well, let's just say that I've been enlightened.
If you've got a kid, they might still enjoy this movie which- as noted previously- is pretty clean. Otherwise, steer well clear of it, even (or perhaps especially) if you actually liked Dungeon Siege.

This movie is terrible. It's such a shame that this movie had such a great cast, but in the end, the story is terrible, the writing is terrible, and the acting was terribly awkward. Where the movie was supposed to be funny, it fails. Where there was supposed to have thrilling action, it fails. I've never seen another movie that fails so completely in every aspect of film making, though, it isn't surprising, after all, it is an Uwe Boll film. I don't know if Boll has EVER made a DECENT movie.
To be honest, the best part of the movie is the credits. That's not a joke either, because the credits (apart from being the end of this terrible film) features music from Blind Guardian, my favorite band of all time.
Please, I beg you, if you plan to watch this film (which I don't recommend), HAVE A BACK UP FILM. This movie will make you feel as if you wasted your evening. Which is what happened to my family and I.

This movie was actually recommended to me by a friend so I made an effort to like it. Although I have generally liked all of Jason Stratham's movies (I thought even Chaos was decent) I could not get through more than 15 minutes of this. It was incredibly boring and poorly written. The dialogue and the acting were actually irritating to watch. The action scenes were horrendous; the monsters would not even work in a B movie. This movie was so bad I have lost respect for my friend for recommending it. Besides losing a friend, I also lost 15 minutes of my life that I will never get back. If you like Jason Stratham check out Revolver and Crank instead.

You're gonna need your ribs taped up after laughing so hard during this stinker of a movie. Matthew Lilliard's "I am your King" scene is so unentionally hillarious that I could not keep myself from laughing so hard. I ran the scene back 5 times and almost passed out from the enjoyment. This film is great for the whole gang to gather around and make MST3K remarks. Ron Perlman looks so, so tired, and Ray Liotta looks like he just stepped off the "Wild Hogs" set. LeeLee Sobieski looks great as always, but seriously, this sweetheart needs a better agent. Kristanna Lokken (whose naked butt in Terminator 3 was the only saving grace from that TURKEY) has next to nothing to do except swing aroung on a fake vine and look pretty.
This is a great film to watch while waitng for your flu medication to kick in. What a side-splitter!!
