Amazon.com: It would be overpraise to propose that Flawless reviews itself with its title, but... how about 'supremely decorous'? It is, at any rate, a film that merits a grateful salute from audiences weary of being beaten about the head and shoulders in pursuit of an engrossing caper movie. A plot to make off with a fortune in gems from England's premier diamond company unfolds without explosions, vrooming vehicles, or rapid-fire shootouts. It's like a feature-length variation on those sly, soft-spoken Alfred Hitchcock Presents episodes of the '50s, with the patient accumulation of mood, detail and character leading to wry twists and satisfying revelations. We are in 1960 and a London not yet disposed to swing. Laura Quinn (Demi Moore), the lone female officer of London Diamond Corporation, is smarter and more capable than her male colleagues, but that doesn't deter the company from promoting them over her while profiting from her talents. This has long since gotten old, so when Mr. Hobbs (Michael Caine), the mild-mannered night janitor, enlists her in a scheme to fill his thermos with two million pounds' worth of diamonds from the vault, she listens. Suffice it to say that the vault is penetrated according to plan--and then the real tension sets in. Things are not what they seem, even to those supposedly in the know (us, for instance), and distrust springs up between the conspirators as they find themselves under close scrutiny by a steely investigator (Lambert Wilson).
All this is intelligently scripted by Edward A. Anderson (a maiden effort) and directed by Michael Radford with a crisp, unostentatious eye; the cold interiors of the Lon Di headquarters, generically oppressive on first sight, take on a nuanced familiarity as the place where, for the most part, Laura Quinn spends her life. Demi Moore--scarlet lips in a black-and-grey world--admirably catches Laura's not-quite-smothered ambition and frustration without breaking her cover, as it were. Michael Caine couldn't be better as Hobbs, an invisible man in plain sight (how many viewers fail to notice his first appearance in the film?); he's the master of his trade, but you knew that. There's a framing story, set more or less in the present, which seems to be an obligatory bow to feminism but sets up a tease or two of its own, then adds yet another twist to the proceedings. --Richard T. Rating: - disappointing
This movie was a surprise. I found it hard to believe that such excellent actors could be part of such a shallow and affected movie. It felt like they were just so impressed with themselves that went through the motions.
Don't bother.
Rating: - first-class caper film
Set in London in 1960, the aptly named "Flawless" features Demi Moore as Laura Quinn, the first woman to become senior negotiator at Lon Di, the world's premier diamond firm. However, Quinn has pretty much hit the glass ceiling career-wise with the company, and when she discovers that she is about to be let go from the firm, she agrees to join forces with the night janitor (Michael Caine) in his plan to rob the vault of a thermos-full of uncut diamonds.
"Flawless" is a good old-fashioned caper tale done with an abundance of wit, intelligence and style and just enough twists and turns in the plot to keep the audience on its toes throughout. Moore and Caine make a perfect team as the duo plotting the heist, while director Michael Radford generates enough suspense for a dozen average thrillers. The script by Edward Anderson even manages to squeeze in some points about early '60's feminism and South African apartheid along the way.
Definitely worth seeing.
Rating: - A Throwback Heist Movie that the Whole Family can Enjoy.
Flawless has its flaws, but it is still certainly worth watching. The film is proof that if one follows a few simple guidelines it becomes close to impossible to make a bad heist movie. Another reason to see this movie is the engaging acting of Michael Caine.
Rating: - Nearly Flawless Sleeper of a Movie!!
I enjoyed the acting very much in this movie. Both Michael Caine and Demi Moore do nice jobs in their performances. The story itself was wonderful as well... Not too slow! I enjoyed how this drama unfolds leaving one curious as to how this heist was going to be pulled off and what an amazing heist it was!
The only flaws in this movie were as follows:
1) The bad make-up job given to Demi Moore to make her look like an elderly woman at the start and finish of the movie.
2) Demi plays a character whom is as cool as a cucumber throughout out most of the movie, then when the heist happens she loses her poise quite a bit and could have completely blown her cover! Sort of thought it was odd for such a poised character to become so rattled if you will.
3) The ending seemed undramatic to. I thought there would be a bit more to it.
Rating: - An Almost "Flawless" Thriller
Flawless is a very enjoyable slow-burning caper starring Demi Moore and the inimitable Michael Caine. Demi Moore stars as a top female executive in the 60's diamond industry that is stymied by her gender. Caine is an affable night janitor at the diamond depository with a plan. After Caine gives Moore evidence that her termination is imminent - the two hatch a plan to rob the diamond vault.
Flawless was a surprisingly enjoyable heist film and I recommend it. It is not action packed, but a slow moving intelligent thriller with a twist ending.
