Editorial Review:
Description: Based on the best-selling novel by Michael Crichton, the A&E mini-series event The Andromeda Strain arrives on DVD in this special 2-disc collection! Two-time Academy Award nominee Mikael Salomon (Band of Brothers) directs a powerhouse cast, including Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order), Christa Miller (Scrubs), Eric McCormack (Will & Grace), Ricky Schroder (NYPD Blue), Andre Braugher (City of Angels), Viola Davis (Disturbia), and Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) in this thrilling sci-fi adventure. When a mysterious virus is brought to earth by a returning satellite, an elite and dedicated squad of scientists assembles to search for the truth and stop the mutating killer before it ends life on earth. Presented by three-time Academy Award nominee Ridley Scott (American Gangster) and Primetime Emmy Award winner Tony Scott (Numb3rs), The Andromeda Strain includes all 4 televised hours, contains exclusive bonus materials and features Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound. Own the action-packed epic today!
Amazon.com: Acclaimed filmmakers Ridley and Tony Scott shepherded this widely-seen, four-hour adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel about a devastating alien plague spread by a fallen satellite. The Scotts and director Mikael Salomon update the novel's technology and push this production's tone closer to medical thriller than science fiction; a capable cast led by Benjamin Bratt, Christa Miller and Andre Braugher are the clock-racers who must find a way to stop the lethal virus from spreading beyond the borders of a small desert town. Fast-paced and at times surprisingly violent, the Andromeda Strain miniseries also suffers from bad cases of giggle-worthy dialogue and performances, especially Eric McCormick (Will and Grace) as a reporter in recovery, and subplots involving the President and Bratt's romantic history bog down the action. Though the suspense makes the miniseries involving at times, the 1971 theatrical adaptation by Robert Wise was more effective in creating an unsettling sense of slow-building doom. The two-disc DVD includes commentary by Salomon and his production team, as well as a making-of documentary which chronicles the Scotts' attempts to develop the project for the big screen before turning to television, as well as extensive looks at the miniseries' special effects. A gallery of production sketches and photos round out the extras. -- Paul Gaita

Rating: - Don't listen to the bad reviews
I saw this movie recently and loved it. I went to Amazon to buy it and found a bunch of bad reviews. After reading several of them, a theme came through. Those that didn't like it seemed to not like it because it wasn't faithful to the book. I haven't read the book so I can't speak to that but I have seen the original movie. It was good too but there are significant differences with this incarnation. I think this movie is well made with many faces you will recognize. It is suspenseful, more so than the first movie, in my opinion. If you can get past the fact this is a lot different than the first movie, you will likely enjoy it. I sure did.
Rating: - Politically correct nonsense
What were they thinking? Why remake a nice 70's movie and transform it in bucket full of politically correct garbage?
A huge waste of time. It is slow and boring, uninteresting.
Thanks God we have a fast forward button...
The actors are kinda OK, but the script really sucks!
And on top of that, we have to watch a stoned guy straining himself to empty his bowels...
Oh Boy! Culture has indeed evolved since the 70's.
Rating: - Trash, plain and simple
This movie sucked! Science fiction, once a great form of fun escapism has been hi-jacked by political hacks looking for another soapbox from which to peddle their petty agendas, and this is no exception. It has every anti-American cliché known to modern media from conspiracies about the gulf war to government hit men. The number of technical mistakes is far too numerous to mention. The science has more in common with the Greek mythology and the fiction just a vehicle to peddle a jaded view of the U.S. This was nothing more than agenda-drive tripe clinging to the coat tails of a great story and masquerading as science fiction. Everyone associated with this project should be ashamed. Trash, the whole thing was nothing but trash!
Rating: - Super cool movie for a tv drama
Really liked it alot as far as a tv movie goes. Nice twists and turns with the plotlines. ENJOY!!
Rating: - Phenominally bad
Cool idea. I think, given the few good things I pulled from this that the original Crichton book must be pretty good. But good grief, whoever approved the script for this adaptation must've been under the influence.
The story made no sense. No sense. I understood where they were TRYING to take it, but they wove so many conflicting (and irrelevant) plotlines into it that I just couldn't bring myself to care. It was like Mystery Science Theatre 3000 in my house watching this thing- we were laughing every time they tried to do something dramatic.
They steal tired plot twists and basic subplots from every cliche source possible and then bash them together until the thing is utterly predictable and kind of just sad. Broken family, pointlessly evil military types, news reporter guy who you keep thinking will serve a purpose in the plot but NEVER DOES, barely fleshed out conspiracy theory that just gets left hanging, blackmail of agent via her family, people committing suicide to "save" their comrades when there was no feasible reason except that the director wanted some suicide in there, and a guy that falls in some water and just dies for some reason. No explanation.
Oh, and bad acting. Don't even think about wasting your time on this one.
