Amazon.com Basketball System Buying Guide With the high-quality construction of many portable basketball systems, turning your driveway into a basketball court can be as simple as hooking up your garden hose. But while a portable system may ultimately be your best choice, there are reasons you may want to consider an in-ground or wall-mount system before you decide. In-Ground Systems In-ground systems are permanently cemented into the ground--either via a bolt mounting kit or directly into the ground--and are generally more rigid and take up less space than portables. In-ground systems often require that you hire a professional to complete the task, but when the cement dries you'll have a hoop that can take punishing dunks with ease. Many in-ground systems are height-adjustable, include removable post features that let you take the system down for off-season storage, and feature heavy-duty break-away rims. You'll also want to research the adjustable mechanisms on the systems, as there are several types to choose from. Some feature a counter-balance spring that lets you perform easy, one-hand adjustments while others may feature a sturdy, pneumatic system. Wall-Mount Systems Wall-mount systems can be mounted to the side of a house, a tall retaining wall, or a garage. Generally sturdier than portables, wall-mounts have the added advantage of optimizing your existing ground space for the court, since you won't take any space up with the base or pole. Not all systems include the necessary hardware, so make certain you add a mounting kit to your list. Portable Systems Portable systems require minimal installation and offer ultimate convenience. These systems generally feature a base that can be filled with sand or water to stabilize them and include wheels for portability. Although they are not as sturdy as in-ground or wall-mounted hoops, portables are simple to set up and can often be folded for convenient storage. Backboard Considerations Regardless of which system you choose, you'll want to brush up on Backboards 101. Most residential systems feature backboards made of acrylic, fiberglass, graphite, or various other composite materials. While clear acrylic gives the professional look and feel of glass, it is not as rigid as fiberglass or graphite. Some systems may offer steel or aluminum backboards, which are virtually vandal resistant, but don't offer the true rebounding action. The regulation size of an NBA backboard is 72 inches wide and 42 inches high. Most portable hoops are 42 or 44 inches wide and 36 inches tall. In-ground systems tend to be a bit larger, with 54-inch and 60-inch widths being the most popular. While rectangular shaped backboards provide more bank shot opportunities, they are generally more expensive than the streamlined fan-shaped board. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Quality Product, Some Work to AssembleYou do need the right tools for ease of assembly. The right size crescent wrenches and ratchet set (long socket with extensions) at a minimum, along with a saw horse and mallet. The pole assembly really isn't all that tough if you have some WD-40 and a ladder. Two guys is fine for all lifting. You will need to scrape out some of the paint from various holes, but that's not a big job. Read the instructions a few times first. It took my son and I about 4 hours to assemble. We went with sand in the base, but would recommend the non-toxic antifreeze/water option due to the design of the base(es). Rating: - Great Portable Basketball SystemPurchased The Beast to replace a low cost portable system that only lasted five years. So far, it has been a spectacular purchase! Although many reviews complain about assembly, my 12 year old son and I put it all together (except for the two piece pole assembly which I needed a neighbor to help with... need two men for that!) in 3.5 hours. The key is to have a saw horse or similar to attach the backboard to the pole assembly. The instructions were clear and concise, and the parts were all in clearly marked packages. The Beast is rock solid and gives the best play possible for a portable. We now have all the kids in the neighborhood coming to our house to shoot hoops! Highly recommend if you need to have a portable. Rating: - Worth the preventable major pain it is to put togetherI knew from reading other reviews that this is a top of the line product .Now that I put it together I can tell you I got more help from the prior reviewers who I refered to during the fustrating assembly process. You would think the manufacturer would read these and try to improve on the process by redoing the instruction manual. I had the same problem as others getting the to main posts together using oil and laying one end against a tree and pounding a wood block on the top with sledge hammer The way they instruct is useless I also experienced what another reviewer did and that was to sheer or on of the bolts that hold the main pole to the base. You really need to tighten down those already on the base Get them all tight before you try to tighten the base bolts down It tells you in the beginning to tighten them but I think it should be a more important call ou to you and a CAUTION on the page where you put the post to the base Could a saved a trip to Home Depot for new bolt with a little more instruction in the manual We ran out of patience on the height adjustment which we didnt know we had to slide the the hole inside the tube . Called several times and waited 20 minutes twice to get thru Great product we are happy we bought it maybe thats why the company doesnt care to improve the inx .Looking back after doing it once I could put it together easily again but that tells you the instructions are poor and you have to learn from experiece or from other reviewers as the manual falls terribly short as far as I am concerned Rating: - great product -lacking directions1. product great 2.came in 3 boxes - i got doubles on one box so amazon had to resend all three and take all 3 back neither came with directions, but spauding emailed direction promptly didnt come with rod for wheels but i used an all threaded bolt instead of calling amazon again. i give credit to amazon for havin good phone service to answer questions make sure you put poles together correctly cause they are hard to take apart. wasnt bad at all to put together. on a scale 1-10 i give it a 5. directions not bad at all .it is a great system and it is well worth money vs a cheaper system that a storm will blow over. you dont even need sand if you have water in the base. cant say how more than expected the system turned out to be Rating: - Good Product, monster to assembleThe product is 1st class, the two pole peices are a bear to assemble. I advise you sand the poles paint off were they slide together and also oil. It will make a great difference when you try and put them together. |
