Rating: - Dark day on Wall Street discussion
Lehman Brothers bankrupted and Merril Lynch sold itself to Bank of America, while AIG's position remained threatening. The stock market went down five hundred points, and took global markets with it. Charlie Rose opens by asking former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers what this is about, and what to do about it. Summers gives the impression the crisis is managable, and makes recommendations for stimulating the economy. After him come Sorkin, Rosner and Nouriel. Nouriel was right about the financial system's weakness. He gives a disquistion on why everything is going downhill. He talks about the financial crisis effecting the real economy. He says if the situation goes global it will mean unrest in a good many countries. Rosner focuses on the need for transparency in the financial system. All those who discuss the situation seem pessimistic about the near- term future.
This was a program with a lot of interesting analysis, none of which will however make any one happy.
