Bearing absolutely no resemblance to the 1980s TV series that helped to propel Michael Mann into big-time filmmaking, Miami Vice is the kind of serious, and seriously stylish, crime drama that Mann does better than anyone else. As written by Mann himself, this undercover sting thriller doesn't reach the peak intensity of Mann's 1995 classic Heat, and it lacks the tight, nail-biting suspense of Collateral, but that doesn't mean it doesn't occasionally pack a wallop. As Miami detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs (respectively), Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx don't have to do much but mumble their plot-thickening dialogue and look ultra-cool in the casual cop attire, and their partnership is rather lifeless on screen (perhaps owing to the fact that this was a troubled production, with an actual shooting that occurred during filming, and Foxx's refusal to risk his life on dangerous locations in South America). But once Mann shifts into high gear with a plot to foil a powerful drug kingpin (Luis Tosar) and his ruthless middle-man (John Ortiz), Vice pays off with the kind of smart, realistic action that Mann's fans have come to expect. With Chinese superstar Gong Li as Crockett's love interest on the wrong side of the law, Miami Vice covers territory that's a little too familiar, and one suspects Mann's screenplay might've been punched up with a polish or two. Still, this is an above-average crime thriller that demands and rewards close attention, with a climactic shoot-out that's pure Mann, worthy of the brooding drama that precedes it. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Crime Drama Flop
Michael Mann's "Miami Vice" (2006) is crime drama that never gets off the ground. The film is remarkable for what it leaves out and what it includes. Save for the shootout at the end of the film there is precious little gunplay. The drugs also receive little camera attention. While verbally mentioned the drugs are almost invisible in the film, existing only as suspect "packages" sitting around on boats. The drug lord himself maybe gets five minutes of screen time, as does the snitch who rats him out to keep his stay-out-of-jail-card and tax-payer-funded mansion. The drug lord's security handler ends up with far more screen time, but he winds up being a character of almost of no importance, as the police outsmart him at just about every turn and the drug lord escapes cleanly without his aid. So, what exactly did he contribute to the story except for a weak love quadrangle? The white supremacists that begin and end the film as the villains totally disappear for most of the film, making yet another weak subplot in the story. Totally absent from the movie is the requisite paperwork that haunts any investigative police work. Also missing is a police facility of any stripe. Even more striking is the lack of teamwork. Partners Colin Ferrell and Jamie Foxx are almost always going solo, which inevitably leads to the seemingly requisite James Bond love scenes. How many undercover officers actually have casual sex with their operation teammates (portrayed by Jamie Foxx and teammate Naomie Harris) or the target's girl (portrayed by Colin Ferrell and Gong Li as the drug lord's girlfriend)? Apart from being sexual sidekicks, the females in this film have little role to play and receive almost no screen time outside of this role. This film has little action, lacks realism, and suffers from a confused and poorly directed plot.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Miami Vice
Miami Vice was one of my favorite tv shows growing up. I remember watching my first episode of the show while on a family vacation in Florida--past midnight, everyone else asleep, room lit only by the tv set. The show was extremely dramatic and the scenery so amazing. And being in Florida myself for the first time made the show resonate that much more. Well last night I finally watched Miami Vice the movie. I was surprised to feel the same emotions that accompanied my first glimpse of the tv show more than 25 years ago. Everything about this movie is pitch perfect to me--the casting, the locations, the story, the camera's movements, the music, the cars, the boats, the planes, the guns, the clothes, everything. In fact, I keep replaying the final standoff with Yero. I love it when Tubbs starts that 645i and the engine rumble comes through my subwoofer accompanied by Nonpoint's remake of In the Air Tonight.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A gritty and dark thriller of the best quality
Turning a classic tv show into a movie yields both pros and cons. While there is already an established audience that will follow the movie from the show, the inevitable comparison's between the two will cause a lot of criticism, and may yield and unhappy critical and box office return. Such is the case with Miami Vice. Here, Michael Mann, who had a hand in the great original show, decided to create a very dark and realistic modern take on the beloved characters, which resulted in a split amongst fans. I wonder how the reaction would be for Miami Vice, had Michael Mann instead did what he did with Heat, which is itself a remake of his show Crime Story but turned into a more modern and dark movie, but without the stigma of comparison. Similarly, I wonder what would have happened if there wasn't so much behind the scene drama of the actors involved.

The trouble is we'll never know. Which is a shame, as Miami Vice is a dark and gritty cop drama, involving dark themes and moral ambiguity that is seen in more dark films, but is usually not something fans expect from something titled Miami Vice. The movie is not without flaws, I never bought the romance between Farrell and Gong Li, but much like the bleak world that exists in the drug trade, this movie is not meant to show heart. Rather, its meant to show the real world. If you're looking for a gritty crime thriller, akin to Heat or Collateral, then you'll find much to like with Miami Vice. If you're hoping to wax nostalgia of the days of pastel and 80s soundtracks, you should get the original show on dvd.

When an informer, his family and two FBI agents are killed by an international gang of drug dealers, Detectives James 'Sonny' Crockett and Ricardo 'Rico' Tubbs are assigned to work undercover for the FBI in a joint operation to disclose which agency leaked the information to the criminals. They plot a scheme to approach with their team of agents to the manager José Yero and later to the druglord Arcángel de Jesús Montoya. Along the mission, Sonny meets the accountant, investor and mistress of Montoya, Isabella, and after a romantic affair, they fall in love for each other, blurring his professional commitment with his personal feelings. This movie is seriously sexy and seriously entertaining. Michael Mann made a movie that was just pure magic it does have a very good second half and a good replay effect to it. Shoot out was realistic and great.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Treasure hunt for a track from the film (end credits )
Enjoyed the flick overall, however the soundtrack was dissapointing to say the least.

If your expecting anything like the 80's Tv series forget it ! Still good entertainment however.

Also, can anyone tell me what the title of the instrumental song is that plays during the boat race along South Beach at the beginning of the flick ? its also featured after Patti Labelle's "One Of These Mornings" during the end credits of the film.

Cheers
