Amazon.com: A lean, briskly paced and exceptionally creepy thriller, The Strangers earns its scares the old-fashioned way: through atmosphere, sound design, and a simple yet undeniably upsetting central premise that allows for maximum tension throughout its running time. Attractive young lovers Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are already having a bad day--she's turned down his marriage proposal--before a knock on the door in the middle of the night announces a full-fledged siege on their remote vacation home by a trio of masked assailants. The film's first third delivers the most consistent shivers as the visitors make their presence and intentions known to Tyler; the second half grows more frantic and bloody before a gruesome finale that may leave viewers either rattled to their core or bothered by its empty nihilism. Speedman is fine as the downtrodden male lead (who's seen tucking into a carton of ice cream after being rejected), but it's Tyler who impresses the most by s! houldering the lion's share of the terror. First-time writer/director Bryan Bertino impresses by forsaking the current passion for over-the-top violence (save for the finale) in favor of more traditional means of generating fear, and if his project borrows heavily from other films, most notably the French chiller Them (which shares its 'inspired by a true story' origin) and Michael Haneke's Funny Games, at least he's taking from the best. The sound design is among the many technical standouts, and the unsettling score by tomandandy (The Hills Have Eyes) pleasantly evokes Ennio Morricone's fuzztone-heavy work for Dario Argento in the early '70s. On a completely unrelated note, LP fanatics should appreciate how both the film's heroes and villains share an affinity for folk and country music on vinyl. --Paul Gaita

Rating: - The Strangers Quiz
Pick the statement that is false about The Strangers....
1) About ten minutes of the first thirty minutes of the movie are intensely creepy; the rest of the movie is over the top and predictable.
2) Movie completely collapses due to characters that do what no normal people would ever do (i.e. answer the door at 4 a.m. without first saying, "Who is it?" / Leave girlfriend alone at 4:10 a.m. in isolated house "just to go for a drive" after a "strange" encounter / Explore isolated house and property instead of taking a secure position after multiple "strange" encounters / No one immediately calls 911 when "strange" things start happening).
3) Brazen, Manson-esque, "strange" trio seem to magically move from place to place.
4) Scott Speedman turns into a monstrous half vampire, half werewolf and Liv Tyler summons her true love Aragorn, and together Speedman and Aragorn defeat The Strangers.
5) I am sorry that I spent 90 minutes with The Strangers.
Rating: - The Stupids
Starts off very slowly, builds tension, then our heroes make some really stupid moves, but recover and gain the upper hand. Then they inexplicably lose the upper hand by making more stupid moves. HINT: If you have a shotgun and masked opponents have only hand tools, they are the prey. Put them down, fast. Sheesh.
Rating: - Creepiest movie in years
The teaser for this film is one of the best since "Cloverfield" and the full feature does not disappoint. The director knew what he was doing, creating the scene with ambient sound and keeping the audience on its toes. THIS MOVIE SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME!
Rating: - Another mindless slasher flick but, "it really happened" we are told
I need not recount what happens as my title covers it all too well. It is a movie in high demand because that is what big advertising money can do.
As it's supposed to be true, it can't fall back on any supernatural element to help add to the story like HALLOWEEN, and it's endless sequels.
If anything it is an indictment of our society that took place in the 1960's when it was decided by GOVERNMENT that we the people don't need guns
because we have the police to protect us. Unfortunately for the people that bought into that myth, bad things have happened.
Pass on this movie, and wait until it rents for .99 cents, and then don't even bother with it. It's that superficial and bad.
