Editorial Review:

Album Description:
Internationally acclaimed artists Thievery Corporation release their 5th studio album entitled Radio Retaliation on ESL Music. With Radio Retaliation Thievery Corporation raise the bar with a new cast of musical collaborators including; Nigeria's afro-beat heir Femi Kuti, Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Indian sitar virtuoso Anushka Shankar, Slovakian chanteuse and violinist Jana Andevska, and Washington DC's own go-go originator Chuck Brown. Also returning are long time co-conspirators Sleepy Wonder, LouLou, Notch, Zee, and Verny Varela.

Amazon.com:
It's ironic that a band with its musical head so firmly in the clouds thinks so much about what’s happening down here on Terra Firma. Yet, that’s what Thievery Corporation's Radio Retaliation is all about. The musical approach is the same; just as they have on releases like 2005's The Cosmic Game, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton still bring the dub-oriented beats, silky textures, world musicology and outer spacescapes. And while Thievery Corp have always been tuned into the strange currents and impulses of the now, words have never been so central to their work. Femi Kuti lets loose on Africa's long, sad history of oppression on 'Vampires' while Seu Jorge preaches the gospel of peace on 'Hare Krisna.' Both those tracks are killers, but the record has a way of topping itself. In the midst of all the charged slogans and lullaby charm (listen to LouLou's Gallic flow on 'Le Femme Parallel' for an example of the latter), Garza and Hilton will drop a celestial bomb like the painfully gorgeous 'The Shining Path.' So, while there's no missing how politically engaged they are (the liner notes include relevant words of wisdom from a range of open minds including Einstein, John Lee Hooker and Mos Def), Thievery Corp can still send you floating into the ether. --Matthew Cooke

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - lost in their sucess.......
I am a die hard TC fan and have seen them live multiple times, this album is NOT GOOD AT ALL, period. It builds off what they have learned and created in the last ten years but THEN WHAT???? Nothing. Nothing new, more dub rapping, sittar riffs and... what else? It is a lazy effort at best, as if they were partying for the last two years and then realized its time to make a new album. In addition, whats with the crappy packaging?? these guys need to fire their marketing dept because it is just the definition of a useless effort. For an album that rebels against radio airplay , they seemed to have adapted the mentality of the radio establishment, more of the same mediocrity but spend more money on the promotion of it. i hope one or both of the founding members read this because when you guys were hungry with new ideas you made Thievery something special, please dont let it die, after this album please capitalize on your beats, grooves, and flow like the old days but lose the sittar and give the the ska rappers some time off as well.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Better than some efforts but.........
it no "Sounds Fromt Thievery Hifi" or "DJ Kicks" but not a clunker like Abductions and Reconstructions".About on par with "Mirror Conspiracy".They don't re-invent their wheel here by any means but it grooves.Little more of that "Tower Of Power" lite here with usual sitars and drum grooves from Brazil,Africa,Jamaica,India.Again not a re-invention by any means.Definitely more political lyrics as you might expect from the cover art.Worth picking up but I thought an MP3 for $5 was bargain compared with CD.I usually only download what's OOP on Jazz CD but the MP3 discount got me in.
Cheers
Chazz

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Deja Vu all over again
This sounds allright, but really it is just a pleasant throwaway. It's a retread of all their other albums with nothing new to offer whatsoever. Same ole "chill out" style that had its heyday almost a decade ago now.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Retailiate the Past With the Present
Wow. I haven't been this excited about an album for a long time...at least an album in this current decade. I guess I am a little jaded about music because I was at one time surrounded by the classics and soon-to-be classics but this new recording by Thievery Corporation sends out a message to the listener's spirit; be new, be present, be open to the possibilities that are contained in this present.

Last night (November 4, 2008) proved to my soul that changes are taking place. There will be some changes that will be happy and some that may appear difficult, but we are going to be the people that usher in a new era of Love and Light.

What does this have to do with this CD?

Absolutely nothing.

I just wanted to say that.

Peace and Blessings,
john, 'the Light Coach'

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sound Revolution !!!
An impeccable taste of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, they operate out of their Eighteenth Street Lounge club, marrying diverse beats with a parade of impressive left-field guest artists.
Thievery Corporation once again raises the bar with their incendiary and eagerly anticipated fifth independent studio album Radio Retaliation. Along with longtime microphone co-conspirators like Sleepy Wonder, Lou Lou, and Notch the outernational DJ and production duo are joined this time by a new cast of musical collaborators including Nigeria's afro-beat heir Femi Kuti, Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Indian sitar virtuoso Anushka Shankar, Slovakian chanteuse and violinist Jana Andevska, and Washington DC's own godfather of go-go Chuck Brown. With an uncompromising socio-political agenda and richly layered production touching upon the eclectic sounds of Jamaica, Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Radio Retaliation is Thievery Corporation's broadest and most progressive album yet! (From ESL's web site). Concerned about the economic crisis, illegal wars, the food resources situation and many other problems Thievery Corporation considers its duty to speak about it with its music and make the listeners wake up, look around and think of their life style. Yet the band did not make Radio Retaliation too dark for that matter concentrating all the information in the lyrics of several songs. While the elements of a smooth drum beat and dubbed echoes remain throughout this album, it's no ... Read More
