Ron Perlman returns as Hellboy, aka 'Red,' the Dark Horse Comics demon-hero with roots in the mythical world but personal ties in the human realm. Still working, as he was in Hellboy, for a secret department of the federal government that deals (as in 'Men In Black') with forces of the fantastic, Red and his colleagues take on a royal elf (Luke Goss) determined to smash a longtime truce between mankind and the forces of magic. Meanwhile, Red's relationship with girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), who can burst into flames at will, is going through a rocky stage observed by Red's fishy friend Abe (Doug Jones), himself struck by love in this film. Del Toro brilliantly integrates the ordinary and extraordinary, diving into an extended scene set in a troll market barely hidden behind the façade of typical city streets. He also unleashes a forest monster that devastates an urban neighborhood, but then--interestingly--brings a luminous beauty to the same area as the creature (an 'elemental') succumbs to a terrible death. Del Toro's art direction proves masterful, too, in a climactic battle set in a clockworks-like stronghold tucked away in rugged Irish landscape. But it's really the juxtaposition of visual marvels with not-so-unusual relationship issues that gives Hellboy II a certain jaunty appeal hard to find in other superhero movies. --Tom Keogh Stills from Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Click for larger image) Customer Reviews Average Rating: Rating: - DISAPPOINTING I've always been interested in any poject with Ron Perlman. He is so good at that MENACE stuff, he appears to have something of the dependability Robert Ryan had. They called him a National Resource. Mayabe its time to think of Pearlman that way. No dull screen space anywhere near him. But... But, even though I was blown through the roof by HELLBOY, and waited for this production for as long as it took to get the diskette, I was and am disappointed. Why did I wait so intently and for so long? Because I'd seen a technical facility in del Toro's work that surpassed any body else's in so many ways -- inventiveness in camera visualization, fantasy articulation in set design, and in costume as well as puppetry -- and an editing smoothness a seamlessness that knocked my sox off. Many of the scenes called for shots and layouts of such mind-boggling complexity... Well, if you like these kinds of movies you probably agree. Why blab on? In this Golden T__D, the glow was definitely off the banana by the time the meanies got trounced and the soft and fuzzies set in. I was definitely not interested in the hero's impending fatherhood, and lost all sympathy with the character and with the entire enterprise when the director/scenarist decided to regale us with a male-on-male Barry Manilow Sing-Along. Feh! But, there were some memorable scenes in it; like the one in the inter-specie Souk. Rating: - Hellboy+Evil Elf+Bad Slapstick=Mediocre Film I've been a a fan of the comic Hellboy for a long time and I enjoyed the first movie so I was set to really dig this one. I thought that Del Toro could do no wrong after HB 1 and Pandora's Box. How wrong I was. What we got was a "Evil" elf straight of of Lord of the Rings who was about as evil as and altar boy next to Rasputin in the first movie which manager to balance the darkness of H.P. Lovecraft with the levity of the comics (but not too much like HBII) Overall, HBII was a mess and was matinee kiddy-fare with hardly a chill in sight except for the tooth fairy's who were still too bloody cute to be scary. Add to all this mess the comedy routine between Abe and HB and it was mostly a loss. I was bitterly disapointed after walking out of the theater. Rating: - Wonderfully Artistic Fantasy I very much loved the first HELLBOY movie, but the sequel made nightmares beautiful ( which has become something of a trademark of Guillermo Del Toro's ). The sets, costumes, makeup, and lighting were sumptuous, mysterious, and lush. I generally find most comic book characters to be rather cardboardish when they're transferred to celluloid, or plastic ( HANCOCK comes to mind, or the FEEBLE 4 ). Ron Perlman , Selma Blair, and Doug Jones managed to make their characters breathe. Luke Goss was fascinating as Prince Nuada, and Anna Walton was equally captivating as his twin sister. I was particularly drawn to the dichotomies in the plot. The best example of this, I believe, is Prince Nuada, a character that is quite as much an anti-hero as Hellboy ( Perlman ), though he is utterly ruthless in his methods of dealing with the 'greedy humans,' even killing his own father in a last ditch attempt ( as he obviously sees things ) to save the world he loves. Although there are pathos in it, there is quite a bit of humor in this film ( HELLBOY, and Abe drunkenly crooning along to an insipid Barry Manilow song was hilarious ). The action was fun, and a lot less CGI-heavy than most action films based on comic books today seem to be. I enjoyed it as much as V FOR VENDETTA, or DARK CITY. Rating: - Good movie, good set I like Hellboy II. While not as flashy as Iron Man or as brooding as the Dark Knight, it is still a fun movie. Rating: - Hellboy II: The Golden Army Blu-Ray Hellboy II: The Golden Army [Blu-ray] Hellboy II: The Golden Army is a fun ride with excellent special effects. Ron Perlman is as usual wonderful in this part. It looks amazing on Blu-Ray. Even if you saw it before give it another look on Blu-Ray, it's like seeing it for the first time and really appreciation it in it's totality.
