"Bottle shock" describes what can happen to wine as it travels from place to place. Set in 1976, Randall Miller's widescreen docudrama concerns the real-life showdown between California's wineries and their French counterparts. Napa Valley's Jim Barrett (Lost Highway's Bill Pullman) has been plugging away for years with minimal success. A former attorney, Barrett runs Chateau Montelena with his wayward son, Bo (Chris Pine, the Star Trek prequel's Captain Kirk), who would rather do anything than assist his stern father. Bo's co-workers include Gustavo (Six Feet Under's Freddy Rodríguez) and Sam (Transformers' Rachael Taylor), who long to produce the perfect chardonnay. Naturally, the young men compete for the favors of the beautiful blonde (the movie's least interesting angle). Across the Atlantic, Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman) struggles to keep his Parisian wine shop going (cheapskate American Dennis Farina is his only regular customer). Then Spurrier conceives a contest to attract customers; surely, his beloved French growers will put those upstart Yanks in their place. He flies to Napa to look around, and persuades the Barretts to compete. Miller and his wife, screenwriter Jody Savin, previously worked with Pullman and Rickman on Nobel Son, but decided to release Bottle Shock first. Though comparisons to Sideways will be inevitable, the filmmakers take more of a historical look at California wine country. The "Judgment of Paris" changed the face of the business forever, and they've found a lively way to recount the tale. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Does not due justice to the book!
Bottle Shock is based on the excellent historical book, Judgment of Paris, which describes the amazing growth of the wineries in California and the tasting between California and French wines in 1976 in which one of the cabernets took first over the French Bourdeux and one California Chardoney took first place over the French white bourdeux. The book really is head and shoulders better than the film which portrays only one wine and the associated people who brought that wine to Paris. The film also has very flimsy romantic subplot which is the usual modus operandi of hollywood to spice up the movie. I recommend reading the book and forgetting the film.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A savory film
Saw this movie last night on satellite and missed the first 30 minutes, but really enjoyed it. Love Alan Rickman. We kind of take for granted now in the USA the quality and quantity of US produced wines, but it wasn't always this way. This film is a nice, light historical introduction into the development of the US wine industry, thanks to Napa, CA. Anyway, a much much better film than Sideways and yes, the love triangle adds nothing to the movie, but doesn't overwhelm the film like the relationship scenes and storylines in Sideways.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - For the Love of the Vine
I have to admit when I think of Alan Rickman I think of a bad guy. I see that arch villain Hans Gruber in Die Hard. I see the rotten Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Sometimes I see Snape, of Harry Potter fame where he plays sort of a good guy in bad guy clothing.

What I don't see when I think of Alan Rickman, at least I didn't see, is the fine comedic actor he is. Now I have to go out and rent everything he's been in, because he was great in this movie. Usually I don't like movies based on true stories, usually (in my opinion) they aren't very entertaining and when Vesta and I sit down in our recliners with a bottle of California Cab between us to watch a movie, we want to be entertained.

Being pseudo wineassholes and knowing the story--because we are what we are and were following it when it happened and because we lived in Paris for a year--we were predisposed to like this movie. And we did. Alan Rickman is nothing short of outstanding as a British wine merchant struggling to survive in Paris.

It's a love story too, a romantic comedy with a feel good ending and who doesn't love those kind of movies, but this one, well Rickman steals the show. And you know, good guy that he is here, you can still see a bit of Gruber in him, Gurber with humor, tempered by the fruit of the vine. Yeah, Rickman may be just about the best villain to come down the pike, but that's not all he can be. He proves it here. He steals the show. This is his movie.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Chris Pine loves Chardonnay
I bought the movie after catching it on TV. Since I had just become acquainted with Chris Pine on Star Trek, I wanted to see what other movies he might have made. I don't know what happened at the theaters but I loved the movie. It re-awakened my interest in California wines. Alan Rickman and Bill Pullman were both excellent and a fine draw to this "real life" story. I laughed at the long hair on Chris Pine but it takes place in the 70's. It's a nice quiet movie with a good story rather than special effects. A rare find.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Alan Rickman
This was an interesting movie based on real life events. Alan Rickman stole scenes form other actors. They spent a little too much time on the son's love life but the movie was good overall.
