Attention, shoppers: Former King of Queens star Kevin James makes the successful leap to big screen leading man with this Die Hard meets Home Alone slapstick comedy produced by Adam Sandler. In his most empathetic role since his endearing scene-stealing turn in Hitch, James (who also co-wrote the script) stars as biggest loser Paul Blart, a 10-year veteran of the West Orange, New Jersey shopping mall, where he gets no respect from taunting kids who pelt him with ball pit orbs, or a senior who brazenly violates Bart's strictly enforced speed limit in his motorized wheelchair. The film is slow to get rolling as it lays on the pathos as thick as the peanut butter the lonely, overweight and socially awkward Blart spreads on his pies ("Food fills the cracks in he heart," he tells his mother). But then, a band of cycling, skateboarding thieves presumably recruited from the X games take over the mall on so-called Black Friday, the busiest holiday season shopping day. Blart is "untrained, unarmed, and presents a huge target," but, like a plus-size John McClane on a Segway, he is the wild card determined to stop them and rescue his unrequited crush (Jayma Mays) who has been taken hostage. James carries the film on his massive shoulders (the supporting cast is strictly discount outlet, with comedian Adam Ferrara as a sympathetic cop and Bobby Cannavale from Will & Grace and Third Watch as a bullying SWAT team leader the most familiar faces). He proves himself to be an impressively agile physical comedian and he's game for every body slam, pratfall, and tumble. Rated PG for mild violence, a few profanities, and a couple of gross-out gags, Paul Blart: Mall Cop is less crude than previous Sandler productions, more The Benchwarmers than Deuce Bigalow. --Donald Liebenson

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - "Observe and Report" Was Better
If the critics didn't have their knives out for this flick they did let out a collective yawn. After watching the movie I can see why it did boffo B.O. It is what it is. It's a family oriented action-comedy pic and it makes no bones about it. I would call it a cross between sitcom, "McGyver", with a dash of "Die Hard" thrown in. Nary a gunshot is fired yet there's a high thrill quotient on display. Kevin James makes for an affable screen presence but he won't make you forget corpulent legends like Jackie Gleason or John Candy. For whatever reason I think this makes a terrific double-bill with "The Pacifier".

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - What a commercial for Segway scooters!
3 of 5 stars for the shopping mall police story Paul Blart Mall Cop. Another way to look at this comedy movie is a 1.5 hour commercial for Segway scooter. OK, Kevin James plays Paul Blart Mall Cop. Of course, Paul has a crush on a girl working in the mall. Blart is shown to be training a new hire who later is part of a group who invade the Mall taking hostages and robbing the bank. With the parking lot full of SWAT teams, it is Blart to the rescue of the girl and saving the mall. This is a cutely dumb movie. A bit funny. Easy on the brain and worth the time to watch it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Good hilarious famliy movie
IF YOU LOVE KEVIN JAMES IN KING OF QUEENS, YOU WOULD LOVE THIS! MY REVIEW IS 5 STARS BECAUSE IT IS GOOD CLEAN FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT AND THE KIDS WOULD LOVE IT. IT IS FUNNY, HEART WARMING AND GREAT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Funny, but nothing really special
I probably am going to rate this movie higher than it's worth because I have worked with many security guards in the past ten years as well as a stint as one myself so I can see the humor in the jokes of this movie, but for others I can't really say, and there was something annoying about that fake mustache on Kevin James I couldn't stop staring at it in half the scenes. Anyway I'm going to give this movie a 2 out of 5 I did get a few good laughs out of it so if your into comedy I'd say give it a rental probably not worth a buy.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - LOVE THIS MOVIE!
