![]() Rating: - New owner - day 1 review11/19/09 - I received my unit today so my review is limited to the just out of the box experience. Of course the first thing I did was to turn it on while sitting inside my house and follow the first time use setup. I was not able to complete this, because the battery was not fully charged and the unit shut down so this had to wait until I could plug in a power source. I had to go outside to my car and plug in the power cord in the lighter socket to test out the unit. Online FAQ indicates a full charge may take 6 hours. What is in the box differs from what Amazon's description says; there is no "user manual on CD-ROM" in the package. What the labeling on the box says and what I did receive is the receiver with pre-loaded maps, windshield mount (suction cup base), adhesive disk if you prefer to mount on the dashboard (the suction cup grabs the this disk instead of the windshield glass), vehicle power adaptor (standard lighter plug), USB cable, a protective pouch (a thin sleave type), and an user handbook (in English, French and Spanish). The English instructions are 17 pages long in a 5 by 6 inch format. Register your product online at [...] and then visit the support page and download an English User Manual in .pdf format. No information is given in the handbook, manual or online FAQ about the micro SD card slot. However, the Ask Maggie automated interactive agent says the product supports micro SD cards up to 2 GB, but do not use high speed or 4 GB and higher cards. The software in the received unit is version 1.27. The support page has version 2.06 for download as a .zip file. An IBM compatible with MS Windows XP or Vista is needed to do the software update. I recommend that when you buy this unit, you also buy an AC adaptor so you can charge your battery outside the car. You may also want a better case than the sleave. This is my first GPS unit. I'll be using this unit for holiday travel and may have more to say at a later date. Rating: - Very HappyI bought this to use in our other vehicles as I already have a guidance system in my pickup. I researched these things very hard before I bought my Magellan and I'm VERY happy with the 4700. In fact, I like it much better than the one that came in my 2008 Silverado. I have used them at the same time, just to compare and the Magellan wins hands down. Voice is loud and clear. The only con I have found is that the voice does get muffled when it gives a long, detailed instuctions. Actually, it's kind of funny at times. I do like the lane instructions and the overhead signs. The display is crisp and clear and I really like how the map changes as I change directions vs. the one in my pickup that makes me feel like I'm driving backwards at times. Addresses are easy to enter or find. POIs are very easy to find. Love it and highly recommend it. Rating: - It's a winner! This GPS gives intelligent routing and is very easy to use. I compared it in road tests with a Garmin 765T. I'm returning the Garmin. I am not intending to try to disparage Garmin here. I'm hoping to let you know with what I am comparing this GPS when I say it is excellent. After all, only these two GPS'es comprise my hands-on experience with such units. The benefit I want most from a GPS is accurate navigation assistance. Magellan delivers on this and the Garmin does not. That's about it and that's my main point. The Magellan excelled at keeping me on the best roads and getting me to my destinations with minimal stress and frustration. The Garmin 765T often told me to turn one way while the arrow pointed the other way and seems to prefer looping FAR around cities regardless of the chosen routing options and traffic conditions. The Garmin even took me off interstates for no reason and then put me back on the same road 20 miles later to continue the trip. Garmin support told me to set "via" points to stop this problem but I prefer to just send it back and stick with the 4700 that requires less fiddling. Rating: - Magellan 4700I was happy with the price but not at all happy with the way it was packaged for shipping. THe sender just cut some cardboard and wrapped it around the original box. I am an online shopper and this was the worst...no protection except for the items packaging itself. Glad it was not raining or squashed......... Rating: - No Update For Mac UsersThis device replaced a TomTom 730 that was lost in August 09 it has been fairly reliable since then. Today (11.11.09) tried to update the software only to find out they do not support Apple's Mac software. The service tech suggested that Bootcamp be used and that I should call Apple or the Maestro unit could be shipped out to Magellan for an update. This is not smart business in my opinion someone at Magellan has dropped the ball (or apple) big time. This device works if you have a Windows PC but not for Mac owners who don't want or can't have Bootcamp installing XP on their computers. |
