Reasons to run to the store:
1. beautifully remastered audio
2. ***** ORIGINAL THEATRICAL ASPECT RATIO RESTORED: 2.35:1 ***** I popped in both the original release and the 2-disc "director's cut" and we FINALLY have a proper aspect ratio!
3. This is likely the original theatrical cut. A big fan of this movie, I did see it three times in the theatre, and - as with "Generations" three years later, I noted a distinct absence of a few scenes. I noted a couple bits put back in (granted, I have not sat through the full movie for proper verification and I apologize for that), but I did compare a couple scenes - and Klingon dialogue is over the actual film rather than in the black bars.
The picture quality is overall excellent - though it's obvious over-use of edge enhancement technology was used (in certain scenes, the tell-tale halo exists.)
Not sure why the packaging has the USS Excelsior (and if you look at the text on the saucer, it's clearly been mirrored to achieve the angle the slop-artist, oops I mean "graphic designer", wanted... They could have hidden the registry a bit... Of course, they could have used the sodding ENTERPRISE instead of the Excelsior, sheesh! But that's nitpicking... and, sadly, not enough to detract from the rating given the strength of the positives.)
If you're a fan of The Original Series and their final theatrical offering, this is the one to get. Any other DVD bearing "Star Trek VI" on it is a cheat.

Star Trek: VI the Undiscovered Country is a good movie but It's single disk edition. The Special features are not so special. I think the bonus Material in this DVD is low quality. If your able to find the Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country two-disk special edition I will recommend that over this one. I like the film but the DVD transfer is terrible. Don't buy it unless you have never seen this Star Trek movie which is the final farewell to Star Trek:the Original Series. The Original Star Trek cast will be missed. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Deforest Kelly,Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nicholes, James Doohan, and George Takei. I like this movie but the DVD transfer is terrible. C
