Editorial Review:

Product Description:
It begins one day in sophomore English class, just as Ellie Barnett's teacher is assigning Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". From nowhere comes a quiet 'tsk' of displeasure. The target: Sam Blaine, the cute bad boy who's teasing Ellie mercilessly, just as he has since kindergarten. Entirely unbidden, as Jane might say, the author's ghost has taken up residence in Ellie's mind, and seems determined to stay there. Jane's wise and witty advice guides Ellie through the hell of adolescence and beyond, serving as the voice she trusts, usually far more than her own. Years and boyfriends come and go - sometimes a little too quickly, sometimes not nearly fast enough. But Jane's counsel is constant, and on the subject of Sam, quite insistent. Stay away, Jane demands. He is your Mr. Wickham. Still, everyone has something to learn about love - perhaps even Jane herself. And lately, the voice in Ellie's head is being drowned out by another, urging her to look beyond everything she thought she knew and seek out her very own, very unexpected, happy ending.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Could have been interesting... but no
I feel like the premise of this story could have been interesting, but the appalling writing ruined it. I'm not a literary snob, I quite enjoy some chick lit (helen fielding, marian keyes), but this is just awful. It's written like a novel for middle schoolers, with a heroine that never seems to grow past the age of 14 or so. Also I'm pretty sure the (completely unnecessary, strangely unnatural) sex scenes were written by someone who has never actually had sex.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Loved it!
It was a beautiful story. I am a hopeless romantic and this hit the spot! It was truly a great light read!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A little of Ellie in all of us!
I read this book some time ago, but it wasn't available to do a review on it. So now I am! I loved this book. This book was like Ms Brant took a piece of me. I know after reading all the reviews, the majority of people feel the same way.

I loved how Jane talked to Ellie and the beautiful love story, how we would go back and forth between present and past, to find out why Ellie felt the way she did about Sam. What had happened between these two?

I won't repeat what has already been said, but this book is a MUST!!! Ms Brant is a very talented writer and I know I WILL be picking up every one of her books!!!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A very modern Pride and Prejudice
This entertaining little story is to "Pride and Prejudice" what the movie "Clueless" is to "Emma." It's a very modern retelling complete with lots of teenage angst and hormones. Although the story does follow the main character into her twenties and beyond, it still has the flavor of a book aimed at a youthful audience. Throughout the story the main character, Ellie, has the voice of Jane Austen whispering in her ear offering advice on her love life and making social commentary. Some of these little comments are pretty funny as Jane looks at the modern world through 19th century eyes.
Ellie's not sure if Sam is Mr. Darcy or Mr. Wickham but you won't have any trouble telling who's who. I'd classify it as an entertaining airplane or beach book but not definitely not the best modern version of P&P I've read. All in all it's a promising first novel for Ms. Brant.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Twenty Years of life, all in one book!
...and I thought I may have been one of the few people to still remember what teenage angst was like back in high school! Obviously not, because either I was inside Brant's head when she wrote this--whispering ideas to her like Jane Austen to Ellie--or she experienced and saw the same things I did years ago. Ellie's journey in "According to Jane" was to find true love, her identity and know what issues were worth fighting for, all the while having a little voice known as "Jane Austen" whispering thoughts and advice to her. This book is incredibly well written and true to the teenager inside us as well as the adult.

It is very refreshing to read a well written, captivating adult fiction book where you can relive your high school years WITHOUT feeling the physical pain we endured as 17 year olds, and to remember what it was like to be a young adult floundering your way through relationships. I loved the interplay between Jane Austen's advice and Ellie's modern thoughts/remarks about it and laughed aloud numerous times at their little "spats" over a certain issue. (I've often wondered what some of the past great writers/leaders of our time would think of us now and I think Brant nailed Austen's view of the modern teenage and adult world.)

If you are looking for a non-vampire, heartfelt, emotional story about one girl's journey into adulthood, and the speed bumps along the way, then "According to Jane" is a must read!
