"We Are Wizards"
"Potterphiles"
Amos Lassen
If you have not noticed, there is an interesting new group of people in Amerce and they are unique in that they are not political or sexual nor do they share a religious affiliation. They are "power players" in what is regarded as the underground Harry Potter creative community. "We are Wizards" looks at them and we meet a seven-year-old rock star, one of the obsessed Potter fans, and others like him. These people are celebrities in their own right who fell in love with the whole Harry Potter craze and they, through interviews, tell us how it has affected them. As we watch, we find that we begin to care about these people. I did not expect this. I thought the entire idea would put me off and irritate me but instead I had a great time watching this documentary. I learned that ten percent of Potter fans are addicts and many tend to go too far with their love for Harry. Josh Koury's film shows how the fans of the films and books become creative as a result of their adoration.
Obviously the themes of the Potter books of good versus evil and the use of inner strength in order to overcome challenges are great ways to think about the personal problems and obstacles in so many of our lives have served as a means of self expression and in this film we meet many of those who have been touched by author J.K. Rowling's books. The characters and stories have caused many to use creativity and to come out of small and individual worlds and become part of something much bigger. Some of those that we meet are The Whomping Willows Band who may not be so talented but have a great time together, Harry Year 4, a wizard rock band, and Wizard Rock Partridge Family. There are non-musical "Potterphiles" who run websites and write books or create cartoons. There is even a Christian woman who feels that the "Pottermania" is somewhat dangerous.
The documentary is pure fun as it connects to the viewer. It, perhaps, would have been a bit more interesting if there had been an interview with Rowling to see how she feels about the whole matter and perhaps that is yet to come (perhaps on the final DVD release of "We Are Wizards".
