The purpose of this site is to initiate discussion about the Blog Cooperative model. I hope it generates much discussion and ideas. I also hope that it spurs action. Towards that end, I would like to propose the first Blog Cooperative, a consulting venture aimed at helping companies manage their web presence. Areas of focus may include helping companies start conversations with their customers, speaking with their own voices (perhaps in blog format). If this sounds familiar to you, it's likely because this idea, as well one of my blogs, is inspired by Cluetrain. Most company web sites are impersonal, and read like print ads with hyperlinks. There is usually no way to engage in conversation with companies' principals or employees. This blog cooperative venture can help companies create conversational web sites that create real relationships with customers and prospects. If you are interested in joining such a venture -- and ready to do some experiementing with the blog coop model -- join in the discussion for this entry and let's make something happen! |

A very good idea indeed, and something I've been trying to get into the company I used to work for. It didn't work out though, the boss didn't feel like this. I don't even know the reason behind this. It was just never picked up.
An interesting site, this site. I will keep coming by and where possible join in discussions. |

As I was reading this I was thinking how great an idea it was, but I couldn't think of any business this would be a good model for.
you hit it on the head.
Funny thing is, there is a organic farm in my area that delivers food to residents and they have a very poorly designed web site, that really could use a 'community' focus to increase sales and loyalty. I offered to redo their web site with open source software for 3 months of deliveries and they have agreed....
for a bigger project, this type of coop would be great. I would love to join in.
my only concern/thought is how this works out in legal terms, I have just recently set up a LLC (limited liability corporation) with two other partners and all the 'issues' involved can get quite complicated (taxes, etc). On a 'real world' basis, would it be set up as a simple 'partnership', LLC? etc? |

Congratulations from me too on what sounds like an excellent concept. My mind is spinning now with numerous ideas and questions but I suppose, like the last poster, my main concern would be around the legal side of things. Can we get further clarification on that, taking into consideration the international scope here (I'm not a citizen of the USA). |

On first glance, I'd love to be involved. Of course, the rules of the experiment will need to be hammered out, but the idea is too intriguing to not want to be involved. |

I've written about blogging for business before, and will be interested to see how this develops. |

Personally, I don't think a Web Presence consulting firm, while easily adaptable to the blog coop model, is a particularly good idea.
This is because as more people become aware of blogging tools, wikis etc, they won't need anyone to consult them. The tools themselves (especially turn-key solutions like TypePad) will do everything for them, creating an instant Web Presence with no costly consultants involved. And this is good! :)
However, I think that the blog coop model could be used to help ANY business with 'stakeholder engagement' (an important part, and increasingly legal requirement, of CSR - corporate social responsibility) and to streamline and improve decision making within the company.
The idea here is to be Organisational Consultants, specialising in Knowledge Management and Stakeholder Engagement.
The aim is to demonstrate widely that open organisations are better than the inefficient and unequal structures of hierarchy. |
