Khan El Khalili
The Khan El Khalili is a souq (bazarre or market) that spans many (mostly) pedestrian streets. Products sold vary widely from tourist goods to fabrics, spices, and more. As today was the last Friday in Ramadan, the market was very busy with locals, as well as the usual amount of tourists. We stayed in the tourist section of the bazaar, which is quite large itself, sometimes winding down narrow alleys -- you need to be careful not to get lost. Of course, vendors are eager to sell you there goods, and are very vocal about this. My favorite quote was "how can I take your money?" (no sugar-coating there).
You must haggle of course, or you will truly get ripped off. It is a true social marketplace. We bought 4 decorative boxes inlaid with mother of pearl, 5 perfume bottles, a scarf, and some pita bread as a snack at around 3:30 (again, no lunch today). I think several of the Egyptian vendors will forever remmeber Michelle as one of the toughest hagglers they have ever came across.
