Kicker Rock - Through the Gap

Taken as our tour boat passed through the narrow gap at Kicker Rock, Galapagos. There was not much clearance on either side of the boat.

Kicker Rock

We woke up in the morning moored off the island of San Cristobal. During breakfast we sailed the short distance to Kicker Rock, which is a huge rock jutting out of the ocean, which is slowly splitting into several rocks. Kicker Rock is also a nesting place for many birds, including frigate birds. We sailing around Kicker Rock and then our boat went right through the gap between the too main rocks, with on several feet clearance on either side of the boat.

Rough Seas from Floreana to Espanola

On the Beach at SunsetAfter a nice sunset as we left Floreana, we had dinner and the boat set sail for Espanola, 7 hours away. Now out in the open ocean, the swells grew. At least one member of our group became seasick, probably a few others as well. before going to bed we went up onto the foredeck and sat in the deck chairs, staring out at the rolling blackness ahead. No lights, no land, just darkness. We then saw a couple of noctural birds fly by the boat, which may have been the only noctural gull in the world, known to live in the Galapagos. As we went to bed, the boat was really rolling, kinda like sleeping on a rollercoaster. Fun stuff.

Beautiful Galapagos Sunset

As our boat continued moving toward Puerto Ayora, the sun began to set over the ocean. It was a beautiful Galapagos sunset. The sun seemed very large as lowered into the ocean.

Pelicans and Frigate Birds Feeding

As we came back to the boat, Pelicans and Frigate Birds were flying all around the boat, swooping down to the water. The kitchen staff were throwing them the scraps, and they were competing for every bite.

Friagte Birds at Dusk

The sunset was so-so, due to some clouds on the horizon. The sun sets here at around 6 PM, since we are on the equator line. The dinner was very good, but I am still hungry! They keep the air conditioning, cranked in the dining area, so you need to wear a sweater.
