The Google name was chosen to represent the gigantic amount of material available on the Web. It comes from "googol;" the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name is also used as a verb; for example, "to Google something" means to search the Web for it.
A Different Approach
Google introduced a unique concept of ranking pages based on how many other pages link to it. When you do a Google search, the pages with the most links pointing to them are higher up in the results list. Google also set itself apart with its home page. Instead of being laden with graphics that took a long time to download over an analog modem, the Google home page contained only a logo and search box. The page downloaded quickly, and users felt they were getting a faster search even before they started searching.

Google was created by two Stanford students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. In 1996, they developed BackRub, a search engine that analyzed the "back links," the number of Web links that pointed to that page. With an investment from Andy Bechtolsheim, a Sun founder, and others, Google Inc. was founded in September 1998
