GG jokes again about the Google Email service. Is it an April Fools Joke, or not?
GoogleGuy Says: [ Link to quote] Man, I can't wait to read about Gmail in all the newspapers on April Fool's Day. :)

If one thinks logically about this, you can see it is either false, or at least partly false. Working as a storage engineer, I qualified to point out that simply the amount of storage required would be extremely hard to manage, and very expensive. Large storage arrays nowadays made by Hitachi Data Systems, EMC, etc. usually pack 100-200 Terabytes a piece per array.
Now, say Gmail has 40 million users:
40,000,000 x 1 gigabytes = 40,000,000 gigabytes.
40 Million gigabytes is 40,000 Terabytes. If they purchased only high-end arrays at say 120 Terabytes per array (with 1024 physical disk drives), Google would need 333 high-end arrays. These arrays costs millions a piece, and this is not including the fibre channel switches, and other SAN hardware which is also quite expensive. This could easily be a $500 million project.
So, just looking at the numbers and working in large storage networks, I can absolutely say this this is not true, that it would not be possible to provide this amount of storage, certianly not for free. If it were true, Google would probably have the largest storage area network in the world. |

There is only one flaw in your math, dildatron. You assume that all 40 million users will use 100% of the 1GB. This is highly unlikely (and virtually impossible, as everyone's mailbox would be full and unable to receive mail). The question is what will the average storage space used be? My guess would be somewhere between 50 - 100 MB. If we assume the high end, that cuts the cost to $50 million (I agree, such high-end arrays are not cheap). Now suppose that Google can earn 10 cents per user (on average) per month via AdWords. With 40 million users, that's almost $50 million per year. I bet they can average more than 10 cents per user, so...
I would expect them to enforce some attachment related restrictions (max size, max number per message, etc.) What Google really wants is the text of you email, so they can read it and serve you targeted ads. :)
My concern is that widespread adoption of such a problem could dramitcally effect the supply-demand balance of the AdWords program. Advertisers have limited budgets - if the total ads served for their keywords goes up 10-fold, many will not be able to increase their ad budgets to that level. When supply goes up, prices go down. This could have an adverse affect of the AdSense program.... |

I agree that it would be very hard to use 1GB of space for email... but as I am sure you know, email storage is growing dramatically. it is becoming increasingly difficult for companies to keep up with the demand for email storage. So while we say it is plenty of space for now, I am thinking about 5 or 10 years in the future. Email keeps evolving into more and more space. Plain text -> HTML email increases message sizes dramatically, attachments, etc. also increase size. Who knows what's next for email? No one really, but we can agree that emails will get larger and more featureful as time goes on.
So I think we are in agreement, I am just saying if Google ever had to really host that much space, it would be a huge amount of dough in hardware alone, let alone the skilled staff it would take to run such an enourmous 40-petabyte SAN. |

I've been locked out of my account since Sunday - but only at home. I can't get anything more than an automated reply from the Gmail customer service folks. Anyone having a similar issue? I'm ready to kill. |

hi,
i just innocently went over my email limit (i'm not a spammer, i'm a musician with a large mailing list of fans who have signed up on their own) and now i'm not allowed to send email because what i was doing resembled spamming. I have received the classic automated answer which doesnt address my problem directly. anyone have any idea what i can do?
thanks,
/stew |

Stew, The same thing happened to me. I am the personnel manager of the NJ Symphony and sent out over 775 email to colleagues. Now I am locked out. How did you resolve your issue? ~Jim |

I cannot get to my inbox for a couple of days. That happened immediately after I got an ad, purportedly from GMail/Google, that said a new service in the form of a GMail chat function was available.
This is a reply to Adam's 1/19 post. |

Horrible Service.... ALL I CAN SAY..
Someone broke into my gmail account and you either have an alternate email address or u are screwd. In other words if someone breaks into your account the gmail team will not only not respond to your crys for help, but you will get an automatic response in ur email and that is all. Its like they dont care or the emails you send them just dont go anywhere. Get this, You have to wait five days of the account being inactive in order to answer your secret question to get into your account. If someone has acess to your account and keep logging in, you can kiss your account goodbuy, because google customer service just doesnt care.
HORRIBLE EMAIL SERVICE....

I think the "innocent" spammers, NJ Symphony and the band guy, another nincompoof, stove up the flow on the servers, thus jamming its grooves. See January. It was funny. |

Hey All!
I just outtatheblue started getting mailing erros from an account as myname@outlook.com as not being recognized. Of course not, as I never registered it, and don't even know how. I think it started when I downloaded google toolbar, but regardless, every time I send or receive mail, it acts as if ZI sent it from MyName@Outlook.com, or TRIED TO RECEIVE it from MyName@Outlook.com
Any Suggestions? |
