Importance: High

GoogleGuy advises webmasters to use the Google API if they want to do automated queries.

coolasafanman, with the API we can throttle back on queries if we needed to--that's why the API is there, so that people can do low-level queries on a non-commercial basis without worrying at all.

Any IP that does automatic or programmatic queries can get banned, so I would use the API as the legitimate way to access Google instead.

I see the last few GG statements / warnings about "Automated queries". Please define what you or the GG considers to be an "Automated query".

Is it using such programs such as RankMeter (Search Utilities.com), or Web Position Gold, or site Popularity Meter (Sofnik Technologies), or Rim Fusion Rank Position?

I am not familiar with those specific products, but "automated queries" means any machine generated queries -- essentially anything other than a real person manually entering a query. So any type of software package that executes Google queries (parsing the results, etc.) automatically to determine ranking levels, etc., would probably be considered as "automated queries".

Practically speaking, I would guess that you would have to do a significant number of queries from the same IP address/range for Google to notice and take action -- but, as GG says, you may not want to risk an IP ban...

The exception to the rule is the Google API, which allows you do do 1,000 automated queries a day. But it is for non-commercial use, so I am not sure if these product would/can be using the API...

Does anyone know that if one puts Adsense search for a specific term as a convenience to the visitor, is that a problem?
