Same problem--cannot connect to Google or most other search engines. Finally this afternoon received a page (at www.google.com) stating "Your computer is running software that doesn't allow you to use Google..." and that most likely a program was installed automatically. Gives instructions for editing my host file. I get the same message when trying to access altavista, yahoo search, lycos, teoma... Obviously I am not a computer technician--just a frustrated user!

Same problem!! When I log on to Google home page, I get a page that states "Are you trying to get to Google"? Every search engine is unusable, except Excite. GG, please confirm if the HOSTS file needs to be modified as this page advises. It asks to delete every reference to google.com.

RC, I don't GoogleGuy reads messages here. From the descriptions above, it does seem like the HOST file has been modified. The default HOSTS file does not have any reference to Google - it should be safe to delete those lines.

It is interesting that you are seeing this message, as it seems to be from Google - I don't see any benefit for the scumware site to display such a message. But if the HOSTS file is modified, Google should never receive your request! So how does Google know that you are trying to get to Google? My guess is another piece of "spyware" you are running - the Google Toolbar!

I have heard that the scum ware was installed from a popup I received from this site early last week. It does include the url to this site in the code.

Ha ha, Virus Detector, very funny.

Btw, to follow up on my previous post in this thread, I no longer believe the Google Toolbar is involved. I have learned more about this issue since. Click here for more info.

This worked for me.
do a search on c:\ for the files named 'hosts'
for all(multiple)files named 'hosts' delete the ip addresses that are borked(deleting them all is fine)
then to see if it worked open a command prompt(windows xp users only) and type:

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /displaydns
There should be no references to bunk ip addresses, if there is - either you missed a hosts file or something that I have not experienced has occured.

THANKS FIX - I followed your directions and it worked. I deleted the suspicious 'host'. I just opened a search box, searched for 'hosts' and looked at the properties of each, the problems started 4 days ago and the only search result that was installed on that date I deleted. It worked! Google and all other search engines are back!

THANKS!

Yes I have had a similar problem on one of my computers, which seems to have come after my children downloded something!!

Google gets redirected to another site and basically does not work. On the other machines working as normal.

Tried Adware etc ... Virus Control ... nothing?

Help would be appreciated.

I figure the problem out for myself I havent been able to access google, yahoo, lycos, etc. for like a week now. I was reading a bunch of forums to see whats wrong when finally someone gave me the right info to cure this problem go to c:windows/help if you see a hosts file in there delete it and reboot. It cured my problems with these search engines.

well fix's cure was just what the doctor ordered. follow that info to the letter. i felt sick when i opened the host file and saw all the redirection. what a waste of time, i still can't understand why someone would go to all that trouble. if a pop up did that to me, then that sucks.

GJ fix!

Had the same problem for about a month now, most of my fav search engines would simply not work. When I found my "hosts" file it had made a backup in Windows\Help and had loads of crap in it.

It's actually not a terrible mod to my PC, did no real damage and was simple to clear out after someone passed me the direct Google IP and I found this place. Clever move to block search engines.

Still makes me wonder how he did it, since I don't usually accept files with uncertain content. :/

Glad I found this. I'm getting the same problem. At first i thought those posts about deleting the host folder would work, but i saw it was dated last year. So it looks like google isnt working for other people this month (ap'27th, 2004).

pages don't load, 404 errors, that sorta thing. A friend of mine on yahoo messenger using netscape (i use IE) says its working fine right now, but it's not working for me.

Hi, got something similar here. I can goto google .com ok but when I type in a search name..."cars"...IE/Google stops responding and must be killed by the Win XP task manager. If I goto the IP address of google, 216.239.39.99, I can search without any problems. Seems like some virus affected DNS on my box but so far only related to google. HOSTS file in etc folder is clean. If I do a "search" for "hosts", nothing is found. Luckly I know where the hosts file is located in 2K and xp. Can anyone help with this problem? Thanks

Hi people, has anyone ever faced this problem before. Lately I have had some bad experience with some spyware, and finally got them cleaned out. But when I tried to search on google/yahoo, after I typed the keyword and hit enter, it keeps on redirecting me to this page http://61.131.54.618.cc/search.php?q=car&aid=A0006
which looks exactly like google, but simulates the links of some page from spyware, I guess it's trying to fool me to think it's the site I'm looking for. The results returned by google can only be accessed when I open the 2nd page of results.
I'm really annoyed by this problem and did all the spyware/adware/virus scan and the problem still exist.

Hello Richard et al.,
I just got rid of the terrible piece of hijacking adware that redirected both google and yahoo to a mirror 61.131.54.18. All the results of whatever your search on are transferred to the second result page. On the first page only advertisements appear looking just like google results.
The solution here is to look a little longer than your nose (dutch saying). At the bottom of the first page, between the links there is an option 'remove adware', download this tool, close internet explorer and run it.

It took me a night of work with perfoming the most complex registery key modifications, booting in safe mode and much more of those terrible steps. When I showed it to a friend he found it in a minute. (Thanks Arthur !)

The A0006 problem installed by Claria (Gator)...what a pain. I too used countless spyware removal tools. Nothing worked, until I checked at the bottom of the 1st Google search results page...I've downloaded the uninstaller and it's finally gone.

I'm not an expert but I know how to remove all that crap from my cpu...this piece of spyware was by far the most annoying and intrusive ever seen so far. Just downlad the uninstaller...and it'll gone for good.

Rutger, Sebastian,

So you trust running that uninstaller? Think about where you're getting it from! Surely there must be another way that's easier than registry editing? Why can't Adaware, Spybot, and other programs detect this?

Thanks

Help Help Help Please.

I, too, am not having any success with Google. It won't load. I did try to follow Fix's instructions. I searched for Hosts on the c: drive. Only 5 files came up. Two of them were in my Windows/I386 file one named HOSTS the other LMHOSTS.SA_. The same two files were in Windows\System32\drivers\etc and needed outlook to open. There also was a Hosts file in my Spybot folder.

I am not very up to date with the jargon that is being used here, so if you would please in regular english it would be greatly appreciated. Again, sorry for my ignorance and naivity.

Thanks for any help

So now please explain what I need to delete
