I recall that this was from a 'Media Metrix' report dated 12/03. I haven't seen the report, but just recall it coming up in a conversation.
Neither am I a statistician! What I take this statistic to mean is that pages from Google, plus all partner sites, may be seen by 80% of all people using the Internet.

No, I think it is ok for a person to see more than one site! So a lot of the 80% who have seen Google or partner pages have visited other sites as well, almost certainly including 'competing sites'. ;)
I knew I should have stayed away from actual statistics - I hate not knowing exactly what I'm talking about! The vocabulary of statistics is so not native to me.
