GoogleGuy Says Stop

GoogleGuy has requested that I stop posting his comments on this site.

This site will continue (more info below).

I started this site about 11 months ago, to provide an easy and convenient way for people to hear comments made by an anonymous Google employee, known as GoogleGuy. GoogleGuy was posting useful information in a very busy discussion forum. At times, his comments were the only valuable ones to read, and I found myself scrolling endlessly trying to locate his comments. The search tool provided on the forums was extremely poor, not helpful at all for located the comments of a particular member. I thought about recording them privately for future reference, but I realized that others were likely in the same position as me. So I decided to post them publicly, so others could benefit. It turns out that I was right, as thousands of people from around the world began to use the site as resource for Google information.

The owner of the forums was not happy with this site. He made a number changes to the forum site to make it difficult for me. In doing so, he also made it even more difficult for forum members to find GoogleGuy's comments in the forums. Of course, these ill-advised tactics made this site the only reasonable way to locate GoogleGuy's comments, and the traffic to this site increased significantly (Thanks, Brett! :)) To this date, I don't understand why he view this site as a threat -- it provided links and traffic, enhancing the poor search and filtering features of the forums.

From the beginning, I said that I would stop if GoogleGuy made such a request. Though he certainly learned of this site days after it was launched, he did not make any reference to it in his comments, nor did I ever receive an communication directly from him or indirectly from any of his colleagues at Google. For 11 months and over 1,000 forum posts, GoogleGuy said nothing about this site. Based on this silence, I assumed he was okay with me providing an easy way for people to learn hear comments about Google. About a week ago, in a thread about "Google Under Siege", that changed. Suddenly, GoogleGuy requested that I stop posting his comments to this site. So I will live up to my word, and the format of this will change.

Why GoogleGuy suddenly make this request after 11 months and 1,000 posts? He didn't explain the reason. All I can offer is pure speculation, which may be "way off the mark", perhaps:

-my commentary was too critical of Google?
-the current pressure on Google (relating to privacy concerns) is a factor?
-he wants to silence me prior to the Google IPO

I really don't know, but he did sound "annoyed". Feel free to add you own speculation in the discussion for this entry.

If GoogleGuy changes his mind - and I hope that he does - I will begin to post his comments here again. Perhaps he was just frustrated when he posted his request. Perhaps he will decide that easier access to his comments is a good thing for Webmasters and Google alike. If you would like GoogleGuy to reconsider, please voice your opinion in the discussion for this entry, on your own sites, blogs, etc. You can also try posting your opinions in the WMW forums, but you are likely to be censored if you do.

New Format

I will continue to report and comment on significant comments made by GoogleGuy. I will not include entire posts verbatim, but I may quote a few sentences here and there. This will actually improve this site, by focusing only the seemingly significant (or controversial) statements made by GoogleGuy. In short the new format is "more commentary, less quote". As I have always said in the past, my commentary is my own opinion, which some may disagree with. Going forward, I may continue to be "way off the mark" at times, and I encourage open discussion and debate as always. This format will likely take 2 forms:

1) A Weekly Report - summarizing signifcant comments each week
2) Short Articles - focusing on particularly notable comments

As always, I appreciate any and all feedback. What direction do you think this site should take? What features would you like to see?

I certainly would be very sad to see your excellent service go. The fact that I can get useful knowledge from skimming an RSS feed makes all the difference. I'd love to spend time engaging directly with the message board - if I had the time, that is, which I don't.

Aye, I don't have anything against Google, I love them and I appreciate both this site and GoogleGuy's communication with the public (which has inspired other SE's to do so). I honestly don't understand why he would not like a 2nd log of his posts (the first being WMW past history) There are numerous posts of his I have recorded, this site just saved me a lot of time. And the RSS feed rocks. My best guess is the legal team got involved. I think GG is smart enough to know that if it posts then it is thus crawlable and retrievable anytime in the future. Once presence is established, then SEs and other mecahanism keep it stuck in place. Of all people that would understand that, you would think...

I mean there is always:

That Brett is a paranoid dude, worried that anyone would go to any site but his own.

As for Googleguy's take on what you've been doing, he's wrong. He's a public figure in a public forum talking about things that matter to a very rabid bunch of SEO-types. If you hadn't done it, someone else would have.

I'm a little surprised Brett hasn't put Googleguy on his payroll and moved all of GG's posts over to the Paid Members Only area of Webmasterworld.

I think it is pretty clear why Brett isn't happy with the site - 'You will not copy and retransmit any information out of these forums without first getting the permission of the original author of the message and a WebmasterWorld.com administrator.'

That's a pretty clear statement from the terms of service... I guess Mark wouldn't mind if I started copying all the content on his sites and compiled them for others to read.

I love your idea, Mark. In whatever format is appropriate, it helps to understand what Google is doing.

I am a firm believer that working with the search engines to deliver valuable content to searchers is the nest long-term strategy, and that is also in Google's best interest, too.

As someone with a background in the financial field and involved in the past with IPOs, may I hazzard an educated guess that his request to silence this fantastic service is because of Google's forthcoming IPO.

The SEC does not like anything that smacks of 'inside' information and with overly cautious lawyers involved they may have conscrued this service as providing
'insider' information. The fact is the service is simply re-quoting what has been said elsewhere is irrelevant. I believe that you will find that pronouncements from GoogleGuy will generally be fewer and fewer in the run-up to the date of the IPO. That just saves any accusations from the guys at the SEC, as well as saving the lawyers from being 'twitchy' during what is often a tense period to ensure no one runs 'foul' of all the Regulations.

The good news possibly is that when the IPO is out of the way, GoogleGuy may start again to be forthcoming with his good advice and comments.

This is only my humble opinion, but I believe that there may be an element of trusth here.

Please keep linking to every post by Googleguy. The web is based on linking and if Googleguy doesn't like it, he should not be posting on a public forum. I think he quite likes the clique at WMW but why should everyone else be left out of receiving the information?

Boo

Shame on GG etal.

What's the problem? I daresay most people reading this feed are members of WMW anyway!

You report his posts verbatim, therefore cannot be accused of bias. You may add your own few words of interpretation (at the start of each post), but mostly that's just to add context from within the thread it derives.

This is anal IMO.

Oh well, guess WMW's backlink quotient will drop a tad now!

Good luck, I look forward to your new-style summary reports.

Mark, keep doing what your doing, dont change this recipe for success. The main reason why people visit your site is to cut through the clutter and see what GG has to say. Tabke doesnt want you continuing to post GG's comments here so that people are forced to pay membership fees to go read what GG is saying. If GG is posting comments in a forum for all of the visitors of that forum to read, then that informaion is considered public domain and is not copyrighted. I suggest you keep on doing what your doing as surely you are in the right - and we all support you!

GoogleGuy's presence is a major marketing edge for WMW. In fact THE major edge IMO. GoogleGuy's presence is therefore almost akin to Google indirectly putting money in Brett's pocket. With a paid section and continued efforts to push people into it, Brett's commercial operation is obvious and he guards it jealously.

WMW is not a public service. It is device which makes money for Brett. He is running a business. Google, by choosing to occupy his board, are supporting his business.

This has implications. One of these is that many people question the impartiality of the board when Google is discussed. How many adverse comments have you seen moderated out over the years? I wonder why that is? I wonder how many people have been banned from the board? Ever wondered why some people just disappear?

IMO GoogleGuy MIGHT have a case if he posted widely on different boards. He could argue that he was offering a free public service and did not want that exploiting. We know though that he does not post widely. He supports WMW by posting there, almost exclusively.

The hand is shown even more by this request for you to stop. If GoogleGuy really was so keen to help people and offer advice, would he not want his message spreading as widely as possible? Think about it.

What you do Mark is fine. Add my vote to those who want you to continue.

Agh, these are really bad news. :-( :-(

GoogleGuy posts at a site you have to pay to read. What about those of us who are interested but dont have the money to pay it? Why this bias as posting in a payment members only forum and not allowing posting outside?
You'd think he is paid by Webmaterworld to post at their forums, and only there... is he? :-(

Please GoogleGuy, allow us to read you!!!

I'm with you, Mark. I think that Brett decision to make a "supporters only" forum outcasted from WMB a lot of people, from everywhere around the world, not able to pay his "american subscription quotes" (quotes only afordable for americans or companies). Now, almost all the useful information concerning Google is in the supporters forum, and I found this unethical. Google says (quote from http://www.google.com/technology/) "PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value.", but on the other hand, you could only access VERY important tips for optimizing for Google if you pay to WBD.

For a long time, I did not know why most pages of my dynamic site were uncrawled, until one day I found the solution in a googleguy quote readed here: you must avoid query string parameters containing the word ID. If it has not been for this, I would still be looking for a solution (as I can't pay WBM subscription fees).

Moreover, I found it easier to found any page from WMB in Google or here than in WBM because of their terrible search engine.

WMW has become the official voice of Google. It's a deal Google and WMW have: "Be nice to us and Googleguy will give you exclusive information".

This "exclusive" deal is the reason why WMW and Google ask you to stop.

Considering that you only quote what GGGuy says in a PUBLIC forum, do you really have to stop? I hope not...

1. Googleguy could be the flippin' mail boy for all we know. Half his posts are calculated answers which means he was anoying the real guys behind the scene until they coughed up something he could put in the forums.

2. You so much as say one thing about G being inferior and you're post is edited or deleted By "M".

As far as I'm concerned I'll stick to the forum.spider-food.net forums where I can freely put my 2 cents in without getting sticky mailed about some stupid TOS violation.

3. I say Mark buy the domain www.markcarey2.com and post the rest of googleguys info there.

One think i can tell you for a FACT, is that i registered at webmaster world to see what went on there, made a few NEGATIVE comments about google, and i was pormptly asked to LEAVE the forum and in addition, i discovered that the entire webmaster world website is CLOAKED so that my ip address is totally blocked from even reading their google coddling commentary (which is a pitiful excuse for an open forum to exchange opinions on to start with). So my point is that any operation with strategies so absurd as that it would be no suprise thet they would ASK the google guy to cut you off at the knees also .....

I haven't been to this site in a while and found it again on waxy.org. It is too bad about your redesign. The ads in the wierd frame are blocking the text and your drop-down menu is all over the content too. Wish you would revert to the old text based format. Information is the key, not fancy layout.

In any event, carry on with your site and best of luck.

Mark has no more right to reprint information from WMW than I have to reprint information from his site.

Mark - I consider you to be no different than a reporter of news. Your focus just happens to be on quoting GoogleGuy's statements that are being made in a pay-for-view forum.

Whether the forum is subscription based or not, does not have any bearing on the issue. You are not clipping entire conversations verbatim and posting them here. You are observing conversations and what GoogleGuy has to say on the matter. Any reporter would do that.

It is ironic that it is okay for other people to cite GG in this manner and not be asked to cease and desist. Garrett French of WebProNews is one example, and there are others out there that will build entire articles around what GG says.

In my opinion, I think you have a perfect right to do what you are doing and should not back down. But you also have a right to go with your gut feeling and question it's ethics one way or the other. Do what your heart tells you to do, and not your gut.

Brett's in the Google club just like search engine watch. Next thing you know he's going to get 3-4 links from Google.com like Danny.

Google's site says,"While Google does not have relationships with any SEOs" I say bullshit bretts a cloaker and a damn good one. He admits to cloaking meta tags which is a TOS violation for G. as for relationships to SEO's Google links to Danny who links to Bruce Clay on every page on his site. Clay is benefiting from G's PR that is passed to search engine watch which is significant.

Oh and by the way call bruce up like you want to be his client and get him to send you a pricing. You'll learn he's a cloaker. So much for code of ethics as long as you're in G's club it don't matter.

I like it how Google is #1 hands down every year for best search engine according to Danny. He gets a link a year from a Google page because of it.

Just look at all those pages and the scores on them The up kiss G's ass club

I'll tell you one thing the google mods gets off everytime they edit a google related post that is ill favored. they needs to stop being G's hit men and let people speak their mind. If G wants to screw up their results, then let us bitch about them cause I saw some freaky results where spam was filling up the first 50 results on a search query. All from the same domain. of course wmw took that down in 5 minutes.

Mark if you want to post GG's quotes on your own site do it. If wmw doesn't like it tell them to go do another ass kissing conference where they pander do-it-yourself SEO's out of their money with out dated tips. Makes me wanna puke.

The reason for wanting you to stop is obvious - WMW make big bank from it. Googleguy's aim has only ever been to make WMW more money. If his comments are posted elsewhere then WMW lose paying members and due to the anal and frankly crazy way that WMW is run, Googleguy is the only reason they have members.

Another guy in this thread summed it up though - move on. ALL of googleguy's comments are either too vague to be useful or obvious to anyone with intelligence that actually has a clue about SEO.

Dont QUIT! Well, there are fine lines between intellectual threat and being helpful. I am sure this website will fit in the Googleguy's mission of "debunking the myth" and nuturing communication lines between SEO and SE. Don't Quit. I have very high opinion about Googleguy and am sure he would agree.

I don't think you should stop posting.

First of all any person, especially an unidentified person, can not complain that someone quotes, list, etc. their comments that they place on a public forum.

Next, googleguy did not ask you to stop! A post from an fictious person ask you to stop.

If no one knows who he is, then how can you know who is asking you to stop.

It is like a cartoon character, bugs bunny, sending you a post requesting you to stop repeating "What's Up Doc?".

To keep your word, request that googleguy identify himsef and personally ask you to stop posting his comments.

There is no googleguy. Management has probably more than one person making the googleguy posts which are only posted with editorial approval.

If "googleguy" doesn't identify himself, then you have not went back on your word. You can continue and still keep your word. You will be giving in to the establishment, not a google employee.

Post this or rewrite it and post it different places to get your site visitors and other forum readers to give you their opinions.

Therefore, the discussion and posts live on.

Thanks for all the feedback. Based on my traffic stats, I know that a lot of people use this site as a reference for Google information -- but it is nice to hear some voices too.

Just to clarify one point, GoogleGuy's comments posted on this site are not from the paid subscribers area at WMW. All of them are from the public area of the forums. Perhaps some people have been met with a "subscribe" page or other page while when clicking on the links to quotes. This is causes by the cloaking techniques implemented by Brett. He redirects pages with my domain in the referer to his "subscribe" page, in the hopes of tricking people into paying money to access quotes which are actually available for free. He later added to that by blocking links to threads with a blank referer, even those that are emailed from one person to another, completely unrelated to this site.

Michael Evans, you make some good points. GoogleGuy's anonymity is certainly an issue. (For all we know, Brett made that post under GoogleGuy's name.) I not sure why GoogleGuy is hiding behind an alias anyway -- representatives from other search engines post under their real names, and I think that adds credibility. Michael, I will have to think about your angle on this further.

In any eventuality, at a minimum, I do plan to report any significant comments made by GoogleGuy. These are the types of comments that I assign "High" importance to. These reports will continue to be available on this site, in the RSS feed, and via the email subscriptions. As many of you have noticed, we have been hearing less and less significant comments from GoogleGuy lately. Perhaps this is due to the impending IPO. By report only the important stuff, the repetitive, PR-type stuff can be weeded out. Of course, I could be "way off the mark" in my determination of which are important, so feel free to critique those assessments in the discussions, and email me about important comments that I miss.

I really would like hear an explanation from GoogleGuy though. I thought the tone of his request was very uncharacteristic. Perhaps he posted in haste, and he really doesn't want to make it difficult for people to read his comments about Google. I hope we hear from him soon.

Significantly curtailing the comments of the Googleguy may reduce the quality of your publication. I hope you are not being intimidated into this action. What the Googleguy says in a public forum is newsworthy and cannot be held as a copyrighted material, especially if you are crediting the original source where his statement is published.

How much credibility does this Googleguy have, anyway? After reading through a few of the archives I came across one discussing Google's new Gmail service, and he didn't know if it was legit or not, just like everyone else at the time. Seems like a Google employee would know about a major rollout like that.

Sorry, newcoke, I forgot to address your offer.

First, GoogleGuy's comments do not represent "all of the content" of a site. Rather, they are a very small percentage of a site.

That said, I accept your offer to create a site using my content, provided that you cite and link to the source page in every instance (and provided that you reveal your true indentity first - is there a reason that you are hiding behind an alias?). Another thing, it would be really great if you can also include the comments that I make on other forums and blogs around the internet, it would be a great way to track all those conversations. I am excited about your new project, let me know when you can get started. :)

Ps. You won't be first to do this however. Someone else is already copying all my content (and I am not complaining about that, either)

Ha - you have him there Mark! Not to mention 'Cloaker Brett' as well.

You're providing an excellent public service here, and one which isn't 'push push push' into subscriber area via some seemingly dubious relationship with a giant corp.

For my two pence, keep it rolling. I stop by here a couple of times per week and thoroughly enjoy the read.

Hey Mark, you should keep on doing that..
It's a free country. You give a valueable service. Hack. They're not happy with that? Too bad. One of the major reasons I visited WMW is for googleguy's comments. Your site was a good summary, and you know what, lately I didn't visit WMW since your summaries were good enough for me..

The principle (as you well know) remains the same. A small portion or the whole site - it is only a matter of severity. The copyright and terms of service issues are the same really.

Were I to create a site using your content I wouldn't really care if you invited me to or not - that is the point I am making - I would just do it.

I think it's good that you're standing by your promise to end this if Googleguy asks. But - consider this analogy - if I'm selling copied DVD's of disney films and I promise to stop if Disney asks me to - do you think that would make a difference in court?

I think people here should worry less about what gg says and more about optimising their own sites.

May be GG got to much upset with the bad press Google got since last july/november ?

But Mark keep on going for thoses three majors reasons :

- GG is pay for that (the 20% time involved to external activities)
- Whe all at WmW, be the first beta testers and feedback feeders to GG who reporting back to Google and GG is more and more reticent to give good info
- BT have take a commercial turn not compatible with the first philosophy of that forum. I start 1 year ago to avoid any link to his forum. Some others one will soon take his first step for the first source on SEO/SEM.

It's hard to believe that anyone can believe that GG is there to provide a public service. If that was his motive, why would he have an issue with this? Why wouldn't he post in other places?

Surely anyone posting with benevolent motives would post as widely as they could, and would ENCOURAGE sites like this to quote them.

Wmw is a business as mentioned by people above, and it isn't a particularly nice one either. The censorship (they call it 'moderation') is ridiculous and sometimes hysterical. And the ego's? Well, it would be too bad if they actually had a reason to have a big ego.

Carry on quoting my man. Carry on quoting!

Why stop posting? There's no law against quoting people, even if they specifically ask not to be quoted, as long as you give them credit. This site is useful. Keep posting.

How disappointing that GoogleGuy said 'Stop'!
I have come to rely on this site as a reliable source of information on Google, especially when all the Webmaster and SEO forums carry endless speculative commentaries on what is happening with the world's favourite SE, the vast majority of it, complete BS I hasten to add.
Bummer!

"One of these is that many people question the impartiality of the board when Google is discussed. How many adverse comments have you seen moderated out over the years?"

FACT:
I made the comment on WMW a few weeks ago about the spammy results appearing on Google versus the better results on Yahoo.
My comment got edited out within minutes.

wmw IS biased. I wouldn't bother wasting my time on there.

If GoogleGuy was all he pretended to be he wouldn't just post on wmw.

As long as he feeds that single webmaster board, you are under no obligation to take any notice when he asks you to stop.

If he really was interested in providing a free service, why not post in other places as well? In fact, why not contact you and post here?

First time reader here...... but still just as interested. Telling you to stop posting GGuy's quotes and writings is like a newspaper that costs money telling a free newspaper not to display the same news as them. Its news........let it go GG.....He has the right to post whatever he wants as long as he does it properly. Plus if it is in in the TOS, how does it affect another website. The TOS for one site isnt the same for all of em..........

Your doing great work, dont stop unless you really want to.

(I'm mightily pissed at myself for not finding this site before... :D )

I haven't heard anyone mention it: What about "fair use" provisions of copyright law?

Mark isn't duplicating all of WMW, nor is he duplicating all of GG comments.

WMW is a publicly-accessible forum; you do not have to pay to read what GG says, and you don't have to even register as a member to read them. The only requirements are a browser and 'net connection.

I'd wager that most courts would say that it is an unreasonable expectation to not be quoted in a (relevant?) forum (forum - in the broad sense of the word), when an individual makes a noteworthy statement in a public(ly accessible) forum.

Plain & simple - don't want to be quoted? Keep your mouth shut, then. Works for me...

FWIW, "balam" is my third WMW alias. (I know, moth to a flame...)

My first ban came when I questioned Brett's heavy-handed and software-automated editting of my posts. When confronted, Brett admitted that the WMW forum software scans your post when you submit it for certain phrases & letter combinations, and then automatically switches them to what Brett wants us to see. I don't mind when this sort of altering is done to change "f*ck" to "****", but I discovered this when I used the letters "wmw", but not in reference to WebMasterWorld, which is what the software will automatically expand that combo to. (There are some other combos & words... Unfortunately, only "wmw" sticks in mind at the moment.) Brett admitted that, yes, the software is sticking words into my mouth. The ban hit when I asked Brett what right he has to alter my copyrighted material - my posts - via hand & software and then present that to the public as something I had said. The ban was, of course, his answer to the question...

My second ban came when I confronted Brett about false advertising on his subscription page - and it's still there after more than a year-and-a-half. A six month subscription is $89; a year is $149, advertised as "Save 30%".

Do the math... Your savings? 16.29%

If the yearly subscription did truly offer a 30% savings, you'd only have to pay $124.60.

The details of my first ban are partially independantly verifiable; for the second, they remain there for the world to see.

After this message, I think I see my third ban coming... :D

Forgive me, but I forgot to mention...

If Brett & GG don't like editorial, opinion or comments that are "way off the mark," then don't visit this site.

You don't see me watching & bitching about Fox News now, eh?

Mark,

I really think that you make a mistake if you don't want to quote GoogleGuy. It's the case since he said "stop" to you !
Since this day, he posts almost 100 messages on WmW whithout your comments !

You can read them on

Balam:The list of people thrown off WMW must be very long by now, and will include many of the people who actually made it worth visiting in the past.

Dictatorial policies like those adopted there have a habit of backfiring though. The quality of WMW is nowhere near to what it used to be. Those with inquiring and intelligent minds seem less and less welcome. I never even bother lurking there any more. There are far better destinations, even with Google doing their best to prop it up and therefore lace Brett's pockets.

Please Mark, continue with this service as I like to follow what GG has to say without reading all posts at WMW.

I am also surprised that WMW is censoring so many valid posts, like they dont want the public to know to much and keep that information for themselves.

He did seem upset by your site. But you made a valid point, its the easiest way to find his comments. They could have added a similar section @ WMW.

Hey Peter? Since you are in Internet Marketing and provide a Search Engine Newsletter ... that was obviously a Spam question eh? If not, then I suggest that you get rid of your newsletter because you obviously do not know what you are doing. This is not Google and this site only yanks in quotes from GoogleGuy which is on another site altogether. Do your research dude or get of the game.

Relax Dodger,

I was just hoping to appeal to GoogleGuy (or someone at Google) to tell something about their plans in south america.

I don't spam, and if it makes you feel any better, I left out the url so I don't gain a link,. :)

Sorry Peter.

Try WebmasterWorld.com with a post. You will get his attention better there.

It appears that GG's postings are of a limited capacity. It is the IPO silent period and I have a feeling a question like that may not get answered until after the auction. Still, there is enough knowledgable people at WMW who may give you some inkling as to what may be happening.

Interesting ... I hadn't been on this site for a while, although I have noticed that GoogleGuy had been quiet on WMW in recent months.

I guess it's going to be difficult for Google to retain its friendly identity now that it is becoming a mega-corporation. Pity, but inevitable ... until the next friendly/brash "killer" internet company comes along.

I had similar probs with "content" if I thought in public interest, I would publish; although I always gave refs to poster or content etc.

Anyhow one forum -;) contacted me asking I stopped using their "content" anyhow I told them it was not copied from their site, I got the stuff from google'e cache, so I told them their issue was with google not me, waiting to here from google.

I now notice some no cache tags on their site

Pretty obvious to me - he is not a genuine Google employee but one of the webmaster world forum owners. Imagine how many people have paid to join this forum since Google Guy appeared on the scene.

Hi, I have a very strong feeling who google guy was! He is a very talented man--in everything he does and he does far more than most mere mortals can ever hope to. I once knew him very well. He grew up in Rome, Italy, is super well educated, nice-looking, terrific writer--the list goes on forever. I wish he would read this post because he'll understand. I don't think his dark side is as bad as it seems and I want him to know this. Maybe he will see the light, change, and in no time at all start posting again!

I thought it was widely known that the original GoogleGuy was Matt Cutts? I doubt that he's written every single post on WMW since then, though. I'm sure that other Google higher-ups have contributed.

For example, the smiley faces after nearly every paragraph lately make me think that Craig S. is involoved somehow.

Who knows. The poster upthread who speculated that the owners at WMW are behind it all is probably correct.
