IP-based penalties are rare

GG says there are many reasons that penalties based on banning IP addresses are not a good idea, and he hasn't seen one in a long time. Link to quote

That's great news, especially since it's now harder to get an IP address for every domain. A lot of web hosting companies require a good reason for a IP address for every domain, and using the reason of trying not to get banned from Google probably won't get you the IP address.
