Importance: High

A member reports receiving an email from Google asking to modify the robots.txt file to allow Googlebot. GG says the email could be legit.

dillonstars, it's possible that you just have a really great website, and someone at Google noticed that we didn't have it in our index. For example, I think that for the longest time, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) had a robots.txt that disallowed any spiders. :) After a while, some engineer wanted to sell/transfer a car, and couldn't find out how to do it when they searched on Google. So they investigated and found out that the DMV was blocking bots. I think someone dropped them a note asking them to consider allowing us to index their page--problem solved. :)

So it could have been a Googler, especially if someone thought your site was good. :)

Best wishes,

Daniel Brandt

GoogleGuy is being disingenuous. We have had reports of such letters at Google Watch. Here is the form of the letter:

Dear ____________ Representative:

Our crawl team has discovered that Google is currently blocked from crawling your site by the robots.txt that is on your site. We would like to index your site at http://_________________ to provide you better coverage and are interested in working with you to do this.

Google's mission is to deliver the best search experience on the Internet by making the world's information universally accessible and useful. To find out more about Google.com visit: http://www.google.com/webmasters/

I look forward to hearing from you.

GoogleGuy's comments about how Google likes the site don't do justice to Google's raw aggressiveness. It reminds me of GoogleGuy's reaction to the many reports that the toolbar phone-home feature alerts the Googlebot to a new site, when that site has no links to it whatsoever. His response was that as far as he knows, the toolbar is not used this way, but Google's privacy policy would allow this sort of use in any case.

Let's face it, GoogleGuy ought to be running the public relations department there if he isn't already.
