Air Canada has the worst web site

Air Canada should win an award for having one of the worst e-commerce web sites. It is just terrible. Everything about is designed backwards and makes it as difficult as possible for visitors. It just took me over an hour to book a flight!

Even before I started booking the flight, I kept getting a technical error for over an hour just trying to check flight availability. Same thing happened to me a few months ago. It seems like the site is constantly having technical problems.

First of all, you require an obscur 9 digit account number to login to book your flight. If you are a frequent flyer, you may keep the card in your wallet - but I am not and I don't. Of course I tried to find a tool that might email me my account number, without luck. I found a "forgot your PIN" tool, but each of the options requires that you remember your account number. None of the 100+ questions in FAQs address the account number question - apparently I am the first person who needed to obtain their account number. I had to call two different numbers, being put on hold twice before trying to remember every phone number and exact address that I have had for the past 6-7 years. Finally, I got my account number - back to my order already in progress.

Now my best guess at my PIN fails, so I try the "forgot PIN" tool. Enter pet's name, no problem. Usually these things send you an email immediately - but this took 15 minutes - okay, back to the order already in progress.

After entering 3 more pages of information, and not before, I get an error saying that the booking is no longer held for me. Why the hell didn't they tell me that the moment I submitted my account number and PIN? Extremely frustrating....

So I start the whole process from the beginning. Of course, their system was not smart enough to remember any of the information that I previously submitted, so I had to fill everything in again. Finally, when I submit the order, AGAIN it tells me that my session has expired (though the error page was different, with no explanation why).

So I start the whole process from the beginning, this time typing at the speed of light, trying to beat the clock. This worried me somewhat, as I don't have a good track record when it comes to correctly booking flights (who knew 0900 wasn't the same as 9pm?). After zipping through the pages and forms, the order finally was processed.

The site is just the worst - I could go on and on. Makes me wanna call in and listen to their annoying automated telephone system blab on and on for 10 minutes (telling youn to go to the web site) before letting to talk to someone (or more likely wait 15 miniutes before you talk to someone).

Air Canada, get a clue!

Hi Mark,

I took a look at their site based on what you wrote here and I totally agree -- they need to take some usability 101 lessons!

I nearly feel like redoing their site for free! (Naaaaaaaaaaahhhh.)

They suck - as a Canadian I feel deeply embarrassed that they represent my country.
I went though the same disaster trying to book - I design sites for a living and so am not a total neophyte online, and it took me TWO hours because I live in Australia - the system simply couldn't handle such a concept.
I checked in the requisite two hours in advance and was not issued a boarding pass, which I at first didn't notice and then thought it must be the way it works with e-tickets. Arrived at the gate and the guy there started to give me shit for not checking in, and seemed to think I would bother lying about such a thing... When I told him the AC e-ticket process was badly flawed in general, mentioning the time it took to book a ticket, he said, "Well you're just gonna have to learn our system, aren't you?" !!!
If I opened a shop, but dug a deep pit in front of it, requiring all customers to pole vault across it to get in, how long do you think I'd stay in business?
Not all Air Canada staff are such lummoxes; many are wonderfully helpful and nice, but the airline itself sucks!
You can't even email them to voice your complaints - you have to send a letter, but all boarding passes are "required"
Next time fly Westjet inside Canada if possible - the site is well designed, prices quite reasonable, staff polite and helpful - sooo much better!
PS I have entered a fake email address to avoid it being harvested for junk mail lists - it's really mwoodard90 at hotmail.com.

I don't know what you're talking about. I fly with Air Canada about 3-4 times a month and book my tickets on-line. I've never had a problem and it always took no more than 5 minutes to book the flight (as soon as I found the right one).
Checking their website only twice and having technical problms like you claim is a small sample, and not good enough to make for generalizations.
BTW, Westjet prices tend to be a bit more expensive these days than Air Canada's not to mention their use of crappy Boeing 737-200 A/Cs.

Air canada has the worst website BAR-NONE of any airline in North America.

It is impossible to use.

Then I tried calling them and guess what? Their automated telephone system is 10 times worse.

How can you book a flight when you can't talk to an ACTUAL human being.

Canada's worst managed company by far.

Hi - For some reason that we cannot understand (not being very techy), we are unable to access the Air Canada site. Can't book on it, can't check flight times, can't do anything. It may be the settings on our computer but all other websites work just fine. Help! Anyone else experience this?
