In an ill-advised attempt to block spam, AOL is blocking all email the originates from residential IP addresses. When I tried to send an email to an AOL email address, I received the following error:

Received: 554- (RTR:BB) The IP address you are using to connect to AOL is a dynamic (residential) IP address. AOL will not accept future e-mail transactions from your address until your ISP removes your IP from its list of dynamic (residential) IP addresses. For additional information, please visit http://postmaster.info.aol.com.

What a stupid way to fight spam. This will block tons of legitimate email. AOL subscribers will realize that people can't email them and they will have yet another reason to cancel AOL.

I run a mail server for my consulting business with a cable modem out of my home. I can't get a static IP with it, but it changes very rarely. I've just noticed this problem within the past 2 months.

Some people don't know that they are part of the AOL domain because they are hosted with a reseller of AOL, but it still is the same issue.

AOL should find a better way to fight Spam then pull a bold move like this.

Well, this is a pretty old thread. But what the hey.

Dynamic does not mean residential. It has nothing to do with that at all. Dynamic means that the address changes everytime you log on. Static means that it stays the same. AOL was saying that people whose address changes would not be allowed to send mail because their messages and service could not be traced and verified.

Trust me, I hate AOL. But you got that one wrong.

AOL is a big company that sells internet services ...But that's not important right now.
