Here is brief overview of Peru Itinerary, departing in less than a week:
June 15 - Depart Bermuda. It will take us all day to get to Lima, Peru, mainly due to a six hour stopover in Atlanta. We due due to land in Lima at 10:30pm.
June 16 - Lima Sightseeing. This is an "extra day", as our tour doesn't start until the next day. We haven't yet decided what we do or see, but it will likely be a combination of seeing the sights near our hotel in Miraflores and seeing some of the more historic sites in central Lima.
June 17-18 - Tour begins. Probably very early in the morning, we leave for the first segment of the tour, 2 days and 2 night in the Amazon Jungle. We will take a flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, where we take a boat up the river to the jungle lodge where we will be staying. No electricity or hot water there, should be fun. The lodge is in the Tambopata Rainforest Area, featuring a variety of plants and animals, including spiders, monkeys, parrots, snakes, and crocodiles.
June 19-20 - Cuzco. We then fly to Cuzco, which is up in the mountains, at an altitude of 3,500m (11,500 feet). Everything I read about Cuzco suggests there are very many things to see and do in this place with Incan and Colonial history.
June 21 - Ollyantaytambo. We then travel to the sacred valley of the Incas. The town Ollantaytambo overlooks the beautiful Urubamba River Valley.
June 22-23 - Machu Picchu. We will take a train ride through the Urubamba Valley to the lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu. From the accounts I have read, views from the train are spectacular (also that the train ride can be freezing!) The ruins of Machu Picchu are nestled between the mountains, which hid the city from Western settlers until 1911.
June 24 - Tour ends in Cuzco. Our is officially over on June 24, but will stay an extra night in Cuzco. It just so happens that June 24th is a major holiday in Cuzo, Intiraymi. This holiday attracts both tourists and Peruvians to Cuzco, so it should be very interesting to experience this.
June 25 - Return to Lima. We will spend the morning in and around Cuzco, then catch an afternoon flight back to Lima, where we have another long wait at the airport.
June 26 - 12:15 AM our flight leaves Lima, stopping in Atlanta. About 24 hours after departing Cuzco, we are due to land back in Bermuda. By this point, we will need some rest -- a vacation from the vacation, as they say.
