Rating: - NO, VIRGINIA, THIS IS NOT A GOOD FESTISVUS BOOK
I think the Festivus Grinch came and stole all the funny out of this book here. It reads flat, like a high school science textbook. Its also a little mean spirited in the way it makes fun of people out in the middle of the country who just want to celebrate a little in their own way - but it tries to make them look stupid. Mean + Not Funny = no thank you.
Rating: - Beyond the Party and Beyond Seinfeld!!
Anyone who doesn't think "Seinfeld" is one of the biggest influences on our society just needs to pick this book up to see proof. First the "puffy shirt," which is in the new DVD gift set, but now books about the "holiday" of Festivus. This book goes well beyond the actual Seinfeld episode, with humorous info about lots of strange Festivus celebrations, which the author says in a dislaimer are real-life stories, along with the goofy history of Festivus (which the author claims originated with Plautus, a "Festivus original"). From the Festivus House at Miami of Ohio to "Miss Festivus" Julie Manker, I was shocked and appalled (in a good way) to see that people are really celebrating Festivus. Lots of funny photos and drawings, and Stiller's intro is pure Frank Costanza. You can almost hear him reading it. The writing is wry and funny. A very good gift for Seinfeld fans, or a good alternative to the usual fruit cakes the unimaginitive offer as presents.
A festivus for the rest of us!
Rating: - not that there's anything wrong with it...
This was okay, I guess. It doesn't really have much to do with the "Seinfeld" show, so if you're a fan you may not be thrilled with it. It is kind of sweet, but it's more likely to make you smile a little here and there, rather than actually howl. Not terrible, not great.
Rating: - 'Tis the Season for Festivus!
I am a true Seinfeld fan so when I first heard of this book coming out, I made it my job to show up to the NYC book signing with author Allen Salkin and Jerry Stiller. I expected many people there but there were crowds in excess of 300! It was fun to see so many fellow Seinfeld and Festivus fans. After, there was an actual Festivus party where fans drank Festivus wine, aired their grievances, and became very competitive while thumb wrestling!! Festivus-The Holiday for the Rest of Us had me laughing out loud but also stayed true to the spirit of the holiday. I highly recommend this warm, very funny book!
Rating: - WHERE'S THE FUNNY? NOT HERE!
This one is disappointing. Kind of a rip off. Almost no jokes. It's mostly stories about people who celebrate it in weird ways, so it's like watching a lot of local TV news human interest stories. I liked that other Festivus book better, the Real Festivus. That's more interesting stuff, about the wacko who actually wrote the Seinfeld episode, and it's a lot funnier. I'm going to give this one to my mother in law.
