Seinfeld - Season 4

 Seinfeld - Season 4
Rating:5 out of 5 stars - The best Seinfeld season?
Maybe. I only own this and season 5, but I look forward to purchasing season 6 (and all of the others) as well.

41/42. The Trip (1) - Jerry goes on to the tonight show. George makes tryes to make an intelligent conversation with other celebrities appearing on the show that night, but they both refer to him as a nut in their interview. Kramer is arrested for serial killing.
43. The Pitch - The 'Jerry' show is introduced, and Jerry and George begin to write the script.
44. The Ticket - Newman and Kramer trade a helmet (from Newman) for a radar detector (which is faulty). Newman's helmet saves Jerry's life after Joe Davola kicks him in the head, and Newman gets a fine for speeding because of the defective detector.
45. The Wallet (1) - Jerry's parents visit Jerry's house so that his Father can see a back specialist (costing him $225?), he thinks he loses his wallet in the doctor's office but he actually left it at Jerry's. He doesn't let the doctor tell him what is wrong with his back - if anything.
46. The Watch (2) - After throwing his watch in the garbage can (that his parents gave him), his unclie Leo finds it and starts wearing it. Jerry's parents get suspicious and he eventually pays Leo $300 for the watch (which was worth $60)
47. The Bubble Boy - The first classic Seinfeld episode of the season. Jerry visits the bubble boy's house and George get's in to an argument with the bubbleboy about who invaded Spain in the ninth century.
48. The Cheever Letters - Susan's (Jerry's girlfriend) fathers apartment get's burnt down by Kramer and learns that her father is gay.
49. The Opera - Another of my favourites. The Seinfeld characters go to the opera and have a funny encounter with Joe Davola.
50. The Virgin - Jerry learns that his girlfriend is a virgin.
51. The Contest - See the other reviews....
52. The Airport - Elaine gats a coach seat and Jerry get's first class on a plane. Jerry meets a new girlfriend wohse name is Tia and she is a model.
53. The Pick - Kramer appears as an underwear model in an advertisement for Kalvun Clein. Tia & Jerry break up because Tia thought she caught Jerry picking his nose.
54. The Movie - The Seinfeld 4 see a movie - a very smart episode.
55. The Visa - Jerry's friend Baboo get's a job at the coffee shop before his visa expires (his renewal form got sent to the wrong adress, i.e Jerry's and because Elaine collectied his mail he got it a week late) and he get's deported to Pakistan
56. The Shoes - Seinfeld's first episode after Cheers (9:00). The president of NBC get's sick after Elaine sneezed in his pasta yada yada yada
57. The Outing - THE BEST EPISODE OF THE SEASON. Many events occur which leads a young NYU reporter believing that Jerry and George are a gay couple. Jerry's parents are in shock while George's mother falls of the toilet.
58. The Old Man - The Seinfeld 4 volunteer in helping elderly people. Newman and Kramer go into a business together selling used records.
59. The Implant - Elaine believes that Jerry's girlfriend's breasts are fake. Jerry beleives her and they break up. Elaine eventually falls on to his girlfriends breasts and realize that they are real.
60. The Junior Mint - Kramer throws a Junior mint into a patient whilst he is having an operation. Jerry cannot remember the name of his girfriend.
61. The Smelly Car - A valet parker 'stinks up' Jerry's car and everyone who goes in it. He cannot get this foul smell out and thus has to sell the car which is unsuccessful. His car is eventually stolen.
62. The Handicap Spot - George parks his Father's car into a handicap spot. A disabled person couldn't park there and she fell of her wheelchair because of this. George's fathers car gets destroyed by people because of this.
63/64. The Pilot 1/2 - Jerry's pilot aires on TV and two minuted after it's finished it's get's cancelled because the president of NBC (in the episode the pitch) has an obsession for Elaine and joines Greenpeace for her. The new president never liked the 'Jerry' show anyway, so cancelles it)

Top 5 Episodes:
The Outing
The Contest
The Opera
The Bubble Boy
The Movie

Rating:5 out of 5 stars - The Pinnacle of Network Comedy
Seinfeld is network television comedy at its best. 10 years later as I watch these episodes, despite seeing them countless times on syndication, I laugh out loud. Each show is original, tightly written, well acted and of course freaking hysterical. Even better they have memory...or in more technical terms a long story arc which intermittently continues themes across episodes and seasons. This adds to the richness of the humor and the fullness of characters, it allows the characters to develop and even though they are frequently reprehensible, we also see ourselves in there behaviors and they become very likable. Most television comedy consists of static episodes with contrived jokes and pratfalls where the only laughing you hear is the laugh track. Not Seinfeld!

Some of my favorite episodes from Season 4 include:

The Contest
The Cheever Letters
Junior Mint
Smelly Car
Wallet/Watch

The bonus material is generally excellent:

- The deleted scenes are interesting, you get to see more of the show, but they generally are unfunny jokes or extraneous/redundant material, (its obvious to see why they were deleted). It helped me appreciate the creative process of comedy
- I have not watched all the commentaries but the few I did watch were not very stimulating. The commentators are too busy watching the show, such that there are long pauses between comments and when they do comment, it something like...that was funny, how did we get away with that...over and over again. Stuff you want to know they don't tell you, for example, what was it like working with Bette Midler.
- The Inside Look featurettes are very insightful as we see and hear about the creative process and the inspiration for the stories. An added bonus is the actors' anecdotes, especially Michael Richards. During the show I thought he was the weakest actor, present to just add some `low brow'. Now I how good an actor he really is; In the featurette we se a so soft spoken, relaxed, and well mannered Michael Richards (almost bordering on shy and reticent) vs. his hyperkinetic spastic Cosmo Kramer. The contrast is illuminating; he really created and made the most of that character. The other actors you can easily see inhabiting the characters but Richards was the biggest surprise.
- The menus are creative and unique per each disk, mimicking a well known local from the show. While they are interesting to watch, occasionally its hard to find the specific menu you want.
- The packaging is good as well but I disliked the packet photos which are cheesy artificial actor promo shots.
- The bloopers are hysterical, you'll be begging for more.
- Jerry Seinfeld's stand up is top notch as well.

In review this is the best network comedy out there; if you want to laugh, buy it.

Rating:4 out of 5 stars - Classic Seinfield
This is where the show really started to shine. Though I think I enjoy the fifth season better, this season we get to see Larry David use one of his trademark story acrs, George and Jerry creating a show for NBC, that lasts the whole season. So many of the shows this season were hits, it is easy to see why this was the "breakout season". This and the fifth season are some of Larry David's best writing, apart from Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars - SEINFELD'S COMEDIC INSPIRATION
Yes, Seinfeld is always funny. Here's what he said about his comedic inspiration: "[Lois Nettleton] was married to Jean Shepherd. He's the guy who invented talk radio and really formed my entire comedic sensibility. Yes. I learned how to do comedy from Jean Shepherd." He said this in his commentary for "The Gymnast" episode on the sitcom's DVD set, sixth season. Who is Jean Shepherd? See the book EXCELSIOR, YOU FATHEAD! THE ART AND ENIGMA OF JEAN SHEPHERD.
