Blogging for a Job

I am developing a new site for a client: Job Search Blogs. The site offer free blogs to job seekers. Job seekers can use blogs to promote their skills and experiences to prospective employers. I think this has tremendous potential for improving the recruiting process. Let's face it: conventional resumes are dull and boring, and don't really say a lot about the candidate. Job Search Blogs have the potential to act an an extension of the resume, providing insight into the thinking and personality of the job seeker.

A few months ago, when I pointed a friend at some of my blog sites, he replied 20 minutes later saying, "I've learned more about you in the past 20 minutes than I have since I met you". If blogs can this potential for revealing information about people who know each other, then this could be immensively helpful to an employer trying learn about a job candidate.

I am interested to learn what others think about the concept. Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I agree that Blogs can and should be used for the job search process. Not only can they convey more meaningful information about the individual, but Blogs can also aggregate valuable information for other bloggers. I'm testing the Blogging waters for the job search potential by using my Blog - http://careernudgeusers.blogspot.com as a place to post good job search articles and also as a cooperative where Bloggers can use my shareware job search management software - http://www.careernudge.com - as freeware by giving user feedback. We'll see what happens!

The following comments should perhaps be viewed in the context that I'm an experienced computer consultant but very new to the blogging scene.

My thoughts on the blog-as-extension-of-CV idea would be that, as someone who has run quite a few interviews, what you want is something in a common format where you can quickly compare like with like. The trouble with the blogs that I've seen is that they're all a bit "stream of consciousness" in flavour: I find myself following links to things I'd never thought of and, after some time, coming away not really knowing what I've learned or indeed what I hoped to find out in the first place!

The "serendipity" that this can create (in terms of finding links to stuff you hadn't thought of) is potentially of great value - but I'm not sure it's the best thing for objective comparison of candidates, especially in what tends to be an uncomfortably accelerated time frame.

If only blogs followed a slightly more predictable format whilst retaining their inventive content... or perhaps I'm missing the point.

Feel free to lampoon a Luddite - but one who, perhaps, is not so unlike a large portion of web users...
